Lake Sevan faces several pollution problems. Garbage and plastic waste are thrown into the lake, polluting the water. Farm waste water and mining waste also end up in the lake. Rising the lake's levels has caused trees to rot underwater and release pollution. Overfishing has decreased fish resources by 50 times and endangered endemic species. Releasing sewage from nearby communities introduces excess nutrients that cause algal blooms, which produce toxins that can harm or kill humans and animals. Depleted fish stocks due to water quality degradation and overfishing have removed an important check on algal growth, as fish feed on organic matter and algae.

Another dramatic problem is the garbage or rubbish that people

throw into the lake or near the beach, especially plastic bags and
bottles are the main pollutants. Although Sevan is being cleaned,
people are so irresponsible that they keep on polluting the lake.
waste water of farms also go into the Lake. Amother cause of
water contamination, Pollutuon.
The waste created by mining will end up in the lake.
You know that hydro power plants are used to produce electricity.
Sevan Hrazdan Power station is situated on Hrazdan river, was
built in 1960s and it produces about 10% of Armenia's electricity.

Raising lake’s level during recent years has caused trees to go

underwater
So when damp trees start to rotten causing a pollution.
Many of you who have been to Sevan, might have seen people
trading by selling fish. For getting money and providing their
families with food, as well they encourage overfishing.

Only fish resources have decreased by 50 times,

especially affecting the endemic species.
Ishkhan, the most famous habitant of lake Sevan is endangered
Actions have been taken to give a new life to Ishxan. 2 companies
have been created to realize this initial.
Sevani Ishxan rises fish in fish farms in artificial ponds. For the
purpose to sell, provide people with fish and to export to other
countries.
Sevan Aqua breeds fish in net cages and when they have enough
weight they are let out into the lake.

The blooming of Lake Sevan and the appearance of

a large amount of algae in it is due to artificial rise
and fall of the lake level, lack of cleaning
equipment, and the presence of many pollutants.
A shallower Sevan allows sunlight to penetrate more deeply into
the lake, raising the water temperature, which creates a more
favorable environment for algae to grow.

nearby communities continue to dump their sewage into

Sevan. Releasing sewage into a lake introduces excess
nitrogen and phosphorus which cause growth of algae

Those two chemical elements are dangerous for lakes and

can cause lack of oxygen in the water that damages the
animals living in the lake. The algae the researches say
produces toxins that can cause illness or death including
humans

Compounding the problem, Sevan has also seen a severe

depletion of its fish stocks over the decades, a trend linked
both to the lake’s degraded water quality and to overfishing.
That has deprived Sevan of a key check on algal growth,
since fish feed on organic matter that, in excess, can
encourage algal blooms. Some of the fish species in Sevan
also feed on the algae itself.
