INVERSE OF A FUNCTION
We defined a function as a set of ordered pairs (𝑥, 𝑦) such that for every element 𝑥 in the domain,
there corresponds exactly one element 𝑦 in the range.
For example, the function 𝑓 relates the three sections 𝑥 and their class schedule 𝑦.
𝑓 = {(𝑇𝐿𝐸 𝑉𝑜𝑐, 1𝑝𝑚), (𝐻𝑈𝑀𝑆𝑆, 5𝑝𝑚), (𝑆𝑇𝐸𝑀 𝐴, 6𝑝𝑚)}
To find the inverse, interchange the elements in the domain with the elements in the range. Hence,
the inverse of the given function is given by
{(1𝑝𝑚, 𝑇𝐿𝐸 𝑉𝑜𝑐), (5𝑝𝑚, 𝐻𝑈𝑀𝑆𝑆), (6𝑝𝑚, 𝑆𝑇𝐸𝑀 𝐴)}
Inverse of a Function
If the function 𝑓 is a set of ordered pairs (𝑥, 𝑦), then the inverse of 𝑓 is the set
of ordered pairs (𝑦, 𝑥).
ONE-TO-ONE FUNCTION
A function is called one-to-one function if no elements of (A) have the same image in elements of
(B).

Consider the given functions below. The arrow diagram shows an example and non-example of
one-to-one function.

Inverse of a Function
• The inverse of the function 𝑓 is often denoted by 𝑓 −1 . The notation 𝑓 −1 for an inverse function
1 1
does not mean . The function denoted by is called reciprocal function and is an entirely
𝑓 𝑓
different function from 𝑓 −1 .
• A function 𝑓 has an inverse function if and only if it is a one-to-one function.
• A relation reversing the process performed by any function 𝑓(𝑥) is called the inverse of 𝑓(𝑥).
This means that the domain of the inverse is the range of the original function and that
range of the inverse is the domain of the original function.
Example:
Determine whether the functions below are inverses of each other or not.
1 𝑥+2 𝑥
1. 𝑓(𝑥) = − 𝑥 and g(𝑥) = −2𝑥 2. 𝑓(𝑥) = 4𝑥 − 2 and g(𝑥) = 3. 𝑓(𝑥) = 3𝑥 + 1 and 𝑔(𝑥) =

Since the points (–5, 6), (– 2, 2), and (4, –3) are
The line 𝑦 = 𝑥 is not part of the graph of 𝑔 or its on the graph of 𝑓, then the points (6, –5), (2, –
