Exercise I
Steady-state temperature distribution
in a one-dimensional wall of thermal
conductivity 50 W/m.K
and thickness 50 mm is observed to be
:
T(x) = a+ bx2 , where a= 200 °C, b
= - 200 t °C/m2 and x is in meters and
T is in °C.
1. What is the heat generation rate g 3
(W /m ) in the wall ?
2. Determine heat fluxes at the two wal
l faces .

Exercise 2
In a manufacturing process, a transpar
ent film is being bonded to a surface as
shown in the sketch.
-- I·ex>=2 0°C
- • h = 50 W/m 2 • K

Bond, T0 = 60 °c
Ls= 1.0 mm -{ ks= O.05 W/m•K

To cure the bond at a temperature To,

a radiant source is used to pro vide a heat
flux q~(W/m2), all of
which is absorbed at the bonded surface
. The back of the substrate is maintained
at T 1 while the free
surface of the film is exposed to air at
Too and a convection heat transfer coe
fficient h. Cal culate the
2
heat flux q~(W/m ) required to maintai
n the bounded surface at TO= 60 °C.

Exercise 3
One side of a 2-m-high and 3-m-wid
e vertical plate at
l 30°C is to be coo led by attachin g alum
inum fins (k = 237
W/m.0 C) of rectangul ar profi le in an
environment at 35 °C.
The fin s are 2 cm long, 0.3 cm thick,
and 0.4 cm apart . The
heat transfe r coeffic ient betwee n
the fi ns and the
su1TOunding air for combined convect 2
ion and radiation is estimated to be 30
W/m .°C.
Assuming steady one-dimensional hea
t transfer along the fin and taking the
nodal spacing to be 0.5
cm, determine :
l . The finite difference formulation of
this problem
2. The nodal temperatures along the
fin by solving these equations
3. The rate of heat transfer from a sing
le fin
4. The rate of heat transfer from the
entire finned surface of the plate.

Exercise 4
A plane wall of a furnace is fabricated
from plain carbon
steel (k=60 W/m.K, p=7850 kg/m3,
c = 430 J/kg.K) and
,.,
CP.ram1c f il m.
R" - Carbon steel,
p , c , k, T,
is of thickness L = l O mm. To prot
ect it from the
corrosive effects of the furnace com
bustion gases, one
surface of the wall is coated with
a thin ceramic film T, . i

that , for a unit surface area , has a ther

R"t, r = 0.01 m2 .K/W. The opposite surface
mal resistance of L.. , )_
is well insulated from the surrounding
s. At furnace start-
up the wall is at an initial temperature
of Ti= 300 K, and combustion gases
at Ta:, = 1300 Ken ter the
furnace, providing a convection coefficie
nt of h = 25 W/m2 .K at the ceramic film
.
Assuming the wall as a lumped syst em:
l. What is the overall coefficient U for
heat transfer from the surface of the stee
l to the gas ?
2. How long will it take for the inne
r surface of the ceramic film to achi
eve a temperature of
Ts,i= 1200 K?

3. What is the temperature T s,o of the

exposed surface of the ceramic film at
this time?
