APPENDIX 1

The mix design of M30 grade of SCC is designed as per the guidelines of IS:
10262-2019

Step 1: Target strength for mix proportioning

a) f’ck = fck + 1.65 S

Standard deviation, S = 5 N / mm2 (from table 2 IS: 10262-2019)

f’ck = 30 + 1.65 ×5

f’ck = 38.25 MPa

b) f’ck = fck + X

X = 6.5 (from table 1 IS: 10262-2019)

f’ck = 30 + 6.5

f’ck = 36.5 MPa

The higher value is to be adopted therefore target strength

Target strength, f ’ck = 38 .25 MPa

Step 2: Approximate air content

Amount of entrapped air content = 1.25% (for 12.5 mm aggregate)

Step 3: Water cement ratio

The water-cement ratio = 0.4 (for the target strength of 38.25 MPa)
177

Step 4: Water and cement content

The water content and cement content were 190 and 500 kg/m3 respectively
for SF3 slump flow class (760 – 800 mm).

Step 5: Fine aggregate content

The total powder content was selected as 570 kg / m3 (generally in the range
of 400-600 kg/m3) for cohesive concrete.

Fines required = total powder content – cement content

= 570 – 500

= 70 kg / m3

The fine quantity aggregate = 70 / 0.08

The fine quantity aggregate = 875 kg / m3

Step 6: Coarse aggregate content

For 1 m3 of concrete

Volume of coarse aggregate = (1-air content) -(volume of water + cement +

fine aggregate)

Vca = (1-0.0125)-((190/1×1000) + (500/3.12×1000)

+ (875/2.62×1000))

Vca = 0.3 m3

Weight of coarse aggregate = vca × specific gravity of coarse aggregate ×

1000

= 0.3 × 2.67 × 1000

= 801 kg / m3
178

Step 7: Mix proportion

Final mix proportions are determined by adjusting the percentage of moisture

content and water absorptions of aggregates

Cement = 514 kg/m3

Water = 204 kg/m3

Fine aggregate = 908 kg/m3

Coarse aggregate = 785 kg/m3
