INTRODUCTION

LOGISTICS:

Logistics is a part of supply chain management that deals


with the efficient forward and reverse flow of goods, services, and
related information from the point of origin to the point of
consumption according to the needs of customers. Logistics
management is a component that holds the supply chain together.The
resources managed in logistics may include tangible goods such as
materials, equipment, and supplies, as well as food and other
consumable items.

SUPPIY CHAIN:

A supply chain is the network of all the individuals, organizations,


resources, activities and technology involved in the creation and sale
of a product. A supply chain encompasses everything from the
delivery of source materials from the supplier to the manufacturer
through to its eventual delivery to the end user.

WAREHOUSING:

Warehousing is the process of storing physical inventory for sale or


distribution. Warehouses are used by all different types of businesses that
need to temporarily store products in bulk before either shipping them to
other locations or individually to end consumers.This isn’t only limited to
ecommerce businesses. Most physical retail businesses have limited space
in their stores to hold inventory but still need to keep up with demand.
Having additional inventory available in nearby warehouses helps ensure

Process of the warehouse:
 Receiving. Check in and log incoming items. Verify that you’re
receiving the right quantity, in the right condition, at the right time.
 Put-away. Move items from the receiving dock to their correct storage
locations.
 Storage. Safely store and logically arrange inventory to enable fast
and accurate picking.
 Picking. Collect the items needed to fulfill sales orders.
 Packing. Prepare the picked items for shipment. They must be safely
packed into the correct packaging with an accurate packing slip.
 Shipping. Send out the finalized sales orders, ensuring that they are on
the right vehicle, at the right time, with the correct documentation, so
customers receive their orders on time.

Private Warehouses:

Private warehouses are constructed and owned by the business


enterprises inorder to store the products produced by them. These are
exclusively owned and used by the producers themselves and are not
meant for other manufacturing or business units On account of heavy
cost of construction and maintenance of these warehouses, there
number is quite small. Only big business houses can afford to have
such type of warehouses.
Public Warehouses:
These are also known as duty paid warehouses. A public warehouse or
duty paid warehouse is one which is open for public at large. Most of
the business organizations,especially small and medium scale, can't
afford to have their own warehouses on account of large financial
investment in their construction and maintenance.

(C) Bonded Warehouses:

These warehouses are owned, managed and controlled government as


well as private agencies. Private bonded warehouses have to oblicense
from the government. Bonded warehouses are used to store imported
goods
which import duty is yet to be paid. In case of imported goods the
importers are
allowed to take away the goods from the ports till such duty is paid.
These ware houseare generally owned by dock authorities and found
near the ports.

in cold storage can be held for longer time.

Institutional Warehouses:
Different institutions and bodies have their own warehouses on
account of the
nature of their operations. For example, Banks, Railways, Food
Corporation of India etc.goods received for the purpose of delivery are
kept till they are disbursed to the claimant.

Functions of Warehousing

(1) Storage:

This is the basic function of warehousing. Surplus commodities which

(2) Price Stabilization:

Warehouses play an important role in the process of price stabilisation.

When the goods are stored in warehouses they are exposed to many
risks in the form of theft, deterioration, exploration, fire etc.
Warehouses are constructed in such a way as to minimise these risks.

warehouses.

(4) Financing

Loans can be raised from the warehouse keeper against the goods
stored by the owner.Goods act as security for the warehouse keeper.
Similarly, banks and other financialInstitutions also advance loans
against warehouse receipts. In this manner,
warehousing acts as a source of finance for the businessmen for
meeting business
operations.

(5) Grading and Packing

Warehouses now-a-days provide the facilities of packing, processing


and grading of
goods. Goods can be packed in convenient sizes as per the instructions
of the owner.

 SOP stands for standard operating procedure. SOPs are more than


simply a written set of work instructions. A standard operating
procedure is a document containing step-by-step instructions to
guide employees on how to perform a technical, repetitive process
within an organization.

Wms (warehouse management system):

A warehouse management system (WMS) is software that


streamlines every part of warehouse management – from receiving
and storage to picking, packing, shipping, inventory tracking, and all
the steps in between.
WMS meaning : a warehouse management system is software that
helps companies manage and control daily warehouse operations, from
the moment goods and materials enter a distribution or fulfillment
center until the moment they leave.

Wms  are a key component of supply chain management and offer

and in transit. In addition to inventory management, a WMS offers
tools for picking and packing processes, resource utilization, analytics,
