VERB PATTERNS
INFINITIVES AND GERUNDS
El infinitivo y el gerundio son formas de los verbos que actúan como nombres. El infinitivo se forma con la preposición “to”
mientras que el gerundio se forma con la terminación ”ing”.
THE INFINITIVE
El infinitivo se utiliza:
1. Después de algunos verbos como: want, decide, forget, help, learn, need, offer, plan, pretend, promise, remember, try,
would like, etc. Ejemplo: I want to eat a hamburger / we decided to go shopping / I need to buy a new dictionary. La forma
negative se forma con la palabra “not to”. Ejemplo: My sister decided not to go to the party, she feels tired.
2. Después de un adjectivo tales como happy, easy, important, careful, nice, etc. Ejemplo: I am happy to see you / it is easy to
find a job nowadays / I’m David. Nice to meet you / HI, Mary good to see you again.
La forma negative se forma con la palabra “not to”. Ejemplo: It’s important not to be late in the class.
3. Para expresar el por que estamos haciendo una acción. Ejemplo: I’m going to the bakery to buy some bread / I’m in this
institute to study English / she has gone to the supermarket to get some food / he went to England to learn English.
4. Para hacer preguntas, despué de las palabras what, where, when, etc. Ejemplo: I don’t know where to go next summer / I
don’t know what to do. I have many things to do.
THE GERUNDS
El gerundio se utiliza:
1. Después de algunos verbos tales como: suggest, like, dislike, enjoy, finish, keeps on, hate, love, don’t mind, practice, stop,
etc. Ejemplo: he finished doing his homework this morning / I enjoy reading in bed / please, stop talking / I don’t mind
going alone to the party / my brother suggested going to the zoo.
2. Como sujeto de una oración. Ejemplo: smoking is bad for you / Going by car is much better than going by bus / Listening
to music is my favorite hobby / eating vegetables is good for your health.
3. Despues de algunas preposiciones tales como: about, after, before, to, on, without, at, for, of. Ejemplo: I’m not very good at
playing soccer / I’ll keep on studying until dinner time / he felt the room without saying good bye / I always read a book
before going to bed / I’m thinking about selling my old car / teacher, sorry for being late.
