Question 1
Read the following text and answer the questions given below.

Brenda Linson never goes anywhere without an empty spectacle case. It is as vital to her
as her purse. Yet she doesn't wear glasses. The reason she can’t do without it, is because
she can't read and she can’t write. If ever she gets into any situation where she might be
expected to do either of these thing, she fishes around in the bag for the spectacle case,
find it empty, and asks another person to do the task for her.

Brenda is now in her late thirties. She’s capable and articulate and until a few months
ago hardly anybody knew she was illiterate. Her children still don't.

She had any number of tactics to conceal her difficulty - for example, never staying near
a phone at work in case she had to answer it and was required to write something down.
But, in fact, it is easier for illiterates to conceal the truth than the rest of us might
imagine. Literacy is so much taken for granted that people simply don't spot the
giveaway signs.

It has never occurred to her children that their mother cannot read. She doesn’t read
them stories, but then their father doesn't either. Similarly, they just accept that Dad is
the one who writes the sick notes and read the school reports. Now that the elder boy
Tom is a quiet a proficient reader, Brenda can skillfully get him to read any notes brought
home from school.

Brenda’s husband never guessed the truth in their years of marriage. For one thing he
insists on handling all domestic correspondence and bills himself. An importer of Persian
carpets, he travels a great deal and so was not around much to spot the truth. While he
is away, Brenda copes with any situation by explaining that she can't do anything until
she’s discussed it with her husband.

Brenda has been very successful in her job. For the last five years she has worked as a
waitress at an exclusive private club, and was promoted to head waitress. She kept the
thing a secret there too, and got over the practical difficulties somehow.

(1) Say whether the following statements are True or False. Put a tick (√ ) in the relevant
column.
True False
(1) Brenda always has a pair of spectacles with her.
(2) She avoids going near the telephone at her place of work.
(3) Always she wants someone else to read and write for her.

responded that this had never been a problem for him and that he had of loved and been

The doctor then suggested travelling and seeing other parts of the world. However, the

everywhere and seen everything there was to see. “Then how about taking up a new
happy? Something completely different to anything you have never done before. That
should be the trick.” But it turned out that the patient had tried that too, several times,
and found no relief.

The doctor began to suspect that the man was an incurable liar. How could he possibly

“Not to worry. I have the perfect solution for you. You must attend a performance of the
greatest comedian of our day. He will amuse you to such an extent that you will be cured

Question 4
Read the following text and answer the questions given below.

Psychologists have found that a person's choice of colour is a clue to his or her personality,
for instance anyone who chooses a bright red over and over again, tends to be impulsive,
while people who never choose red are emotionally withdrawn.

Those who choose orange are sociable and love going to parties and meeting new people.
they are people, who like yellow too, but they are much cooler and more poised.

People who choose blue are introspective, rational and well organized, but sometimes at
bit chilly to meet. Greens are sensitive, spontaneous and emotional - and anyone who
dislike green is just the opposite.

Purple is a dangerous colour, although most of us associate it with dignity and royalty, one
psychologist suggests that anyone who chooses purple as a favourite colour is probably
emotionally disturbed. If you choose black, brown or grey, you are in for a bad time. You
may well be unhappy because you tend to be rather negative and not too good at looking
after yourself. Of course your favourite colour varies according to your mood and fashion;
nobody wears red all the time. But you will probably find that one colour predominates
your wardrobe.

Try to guess what your partner’s favourite colour is and then check to see if you were right.
Three American psychologists asked some married couples to write down what colour
they would choose to have in their homes, and then to write down what colour they
thought their spouses would choose. Those who guessed their partner’s preferences
accurately were the ones who had the happiest marriages. Those who guessed incorrectly
were of unhappy.

Not surprising really - many of them had probably thought they were married to quiet,
secure, ‘blues’ when really their partners were wild, extrovert ‘oranges’.

(1) Say whether the following statements are True or False. Put a tick (√ ) in the relevant
column.
True False
(1) Favourite colours of people shows their personalities.

platform to be in a better position to get on the next one. When this came in, emerging
from the tunnel with a terrifying roar, Tom was swept forward on to the train by the rush
of people from behind. The doors closed and the train moved off before he was able to
get his breath back. He was unable to see the names of the stations where the train
stopped, but he had taken the precaution of counting the number of stops so that he knew
exactly where to get off. His station was the sixth along the line.
