1. The diagram below shows a modified pendulum with a mass attached at each end.
a. The distance between the nail and C labelled x, is varied and the periodic time T is
recorded. The pendulum is then given a slight displacement and it oscillates about the
nail.
(i) Explain how the periodic time T can be obtained for a particular value of x.
[2]
(ii) The table below shows part of the results recorded by a Form 6 student:

(iv) Hence determine the values of a and b.

b. Penguins are normally seen standing on icebergs. Consider
an iceberg in the shape of a flat cylinder of diameter d and
thickness t floating in sea-water.
The density of sea-water = 1000kgm-3 and density of ice =
900kgm-3. The mass of a penguin is M and the mass of the
iceberg is m.
(i) On the diagram on the right, label WT for total
weight of penguin and ice and U for upthrust acting
on the iceberg.
[2]
(ii)

(iii) Calculate N when d = 15m, t = 1m and M = 30kg.

c. (i) Define gravitational potential energy.
[2]
(ii) A body of mass 15kg is moved from the earth’s surface to a point 1.8 x 106m
above the earth. If the radius of the earth is 6.4 x 106 m and the mass of the
earth = 6.0 x 1024kg, calculate the work done in taking the body to that point.

e. A force of 200N hangs on a uniform rod of length L as shown below. The weight
of the rod is 80N and the distance d which is the perpendicular distance of the string
from A is 25cm. The rod is held in equilibrium by a string with a tension T. By taking
moments about A, calculate the tension T in the string.

2. a. The total intensity of emitted radiation from a particular body at temperature T is Itot.
The relationship between Itot and T is:
=
where c and n are constants.
[4]
(iii) For this body at T = 900K, Itot is found to be 71Wm-2. Use these data to
determine Itot for the body at a temperature of 1200K.

(ii) In a continuous flow experiment, a steady difference of temperature of 1.5 C
is maintained when the rate of liquid flow is 4.5gs-1 and the rate of electrical
heating is 60.5W. On reducing the liquid flow rate to 1.5gs-1, 36.5W is
required to maintain the same temperature difference. Calculate the specific
heat capacity of the liquid.
