Salisbury University
The University had a student study abroad in Tartu during the Fall
semester of 2022. An interview with him was included in an article in
the Salisbury Independent titled SU program helps to maintain Sister
Cities’ bond. In February of 2023, the U.S. Department of State’s
Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs named SU the nation’s No.
1 producer of Fulbright Students in the Master’s Carnegie
Classification for 2022-23. In May of 2022, SU co-sponsored the
celebration of the 800th anniversary of our sister cities Salisbury
Cathedral. This April, the University also had the most successful
Salisbury Giving Day. And in May was the inauguration of SU’s new
President, Dr. Carolyn Ringer Lepre.
Wicomico County
Wicomico County elected Julie Giordano as the new county executive. She is an SU alum majoring
in communications with a concentration in public relations and went on to get her teaching
certificate. Furthermore, the county is currently working to expand the runway at Salisbury Airport
another 7,800ft to accommodate more flights in and out. The Shore Birds are an up and coming
minor league baseball team, having one of the greatest impacts on the economy in the county.
With the team’s increasing communal impact, there are current plans to renovate the team’s
baseball stadium to accommodate the growing fan base. Wor-Wic Community College has
recently made an addition to their campus with the new Guerrieri Technology Center, which
students are beyond excited to use and learn in. The county also built the new Pittsville Library. All
of these expansions helped to further grow the community from an economic standpoint and to
enhance it's quality of life.
Wicomico County
Public Schools
Wicomico County Public Schools recently built the new Beaver Run Elementary School and had a
rededication ceremony on May 11th of 2023. For the first time, Delmarva Sports Network did a
behind the scenes on the Wicomico High School football team. The county recently had two
state champions. A student from Parkside High School won in pole vault and a student from
Wicomico High School won in high jump. Wicomico High School's Head basketball coach, Butch
Waller, recently surpassed 900 wins, making the winningest coach in all of MD. The county
recently named Tara Martens the new Wicomico Teacher of The Year. She received her
bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from SU and teaches at West Salisbury Elementary
School. The county has also had numerous students achieve incredible goals such as winning
the National Spelling Bee and being appointed by the governor to serve as a student member of
the MD Board of Education. This school year Dr. Micah Stauffer was welcomed as
Superintendent of Schools.
