 ASIC = Application Specific Integrated Circuit
 It is a chip designed for a particular application.

 On earlier GW devices you had to install memory, hard disks, network
cards etc.
 On most of the modern GW devices a lot of these components are
already installed or even integrated on the controller board.

Additional Applications
 Newer machines (produced in and after 2003) use SD Cards to install
additional applications.
 On older machines the applications had to be installed using firmware
DIMMs.
 Those DIMMs were inserted in slots, located on the controller board.

Controller Releases
 The first GW controllers where very different from each other, which
made it complicated to know what features where available on devices.
 As from autumn 2004 , Ricoh will launch 2 new controllers each year, 1
controller in the spring (Spring Controller or S controller), and 1 in the
autumn (Autumn Controller or A controller).

 The layout of the controller board and possible features depends on the
type of machine.

SD Card Slots
 Modern GW controllers are equipped with 2 SD Card slots.
 On some machine with a GW 2004 Autumn Controller the 1st SD Card
slot is fitted with a special SD Card, namely the System Firmware Card.
 This means that those machine can only hold 1 additional application SD
Card.
Board Slots
 The available boards depends on the type of machine.
 For instance, some machines may have a standard USB2.0 port instead
of the USB2.0 Board option.
 Also the amount of board slots can vary between different types of
machines.
 So as always: use the service manual when you want to install options!

controller.
 So always check the field service manual for installation procedures.

 Starting with 08S a new option was introduced: Scan to USB/SD Card.
 On devices with an extended 09A controller it became a standard feature.
 As of 011A, it can also be used for “print from USB/SD Card” and for
“save SMC to USB/SD Card” (explained later in this presentation).

 In newer models a security SD Card with DOS unit and HDD encryption
is standard available from factory.
 In the latest models (MFP with GW2011A or later) the DOS unit and HDD
encryption unit are embedded on the controller.
 A separate DOS unit is available for customers who need the cc-
certification.

 Overall the installation and activation of these units is the same. Always
read the field service manual.

Created by: Group L&D   Version: V1.0.a   Classification: Internal 25
 Another problem can occur when you do the application move and undo
procedure with the DOS unit.
 You may encounter that the DOS unit is deactivated.
 The machine will indicate “Software has been installed on another
machine”, and there is no (known) way to recover, other then to install a
new DOS unit.
 So just for safety: do not try the application move and undo procedure
with a DOS unit!

machine.
 If you install the wrong type of memory you may encounter serious
problems, like the machine not starting at all, SC codes, crashing
machines during firmware update etc.

Note
 Telnet is a terminal emulation program for TCP/IP networks such as the
internet.
 The Telnet program runs on your computer and connects your PC to a
server on the network.
 You can then enter commands through the Telnet program and they will
be executed as if you were entering them directly on the server console.
 This enables you to control the server and communicate with other
servers on the network.
 To start a Telnet session, you must log in to a server by entering a valid
username and password.
 Telnet is a common way to remotely control web servers.

Procedure:
 Create a folder with the name romdata in the root of the SD Card
 Create a subfolder in the folder romdata, using a descriptive name (for
instance the machine code or model name)
 Copy all the firmware files to the subfolder.

Note
 You can create more than one subfolder in the romdata folder for different
machines.
 However, this is not recommended.
 Just for safety: create just one sub folder, and copy only the firmware for
that particular device onto the SD Card.

Installation Tip 1:
 Losing the supervisor password can be very troublesome.
 You must replace the NVRAM, which basically means you will have to
input all the values from the SMC data sheet and maybe also replace the
developer(s).
 However, with the right precautions you can save yourself a lot of time
and effort.
 This precaution is creating a backup of the NVRAM (on SD Card) before
the supervisor account was changed.
 A good idea is to create the backup right after installing the machine at
the customer’s site.
 Keep the SD Card with the backup in a save place in the machine (most
machines have a save place for storing SD Card, so check the service
manual).
Installation Tip 2:
 An alternative is to rename the supervisor account yourself.
 Choose a name and password which are only known by your company.
 The customer can not change the account settings anymore, so this
could be an easy way of securing the supervisor account.
 However, please note that this procedure may not be acceptable for
some customers!

 Printers can only use User Code Authentication.
Basic Authentication
 User will have to enter a user name and password for authentication.
 The user accounts must first be registered in the local address book of the
device.
Windows Authentication
 User will have to enter a user name and password for authentication.
 Authentication doesn’t take place using the local address book of the device, but
it uses the Windows Active Directory.
 Access restriction can be set on a per user base, but also using global groups.
Notes Authentication
 User will have to enter a user name and password for authentication.
 Authentication doesn’t take place using the local address book of the device, but
it uses the user database of an LDAP server.
Integration Server Authentication
 User will have to enter a user name and password for authentication.
 The integration server (which is integrated in RDSv3Mk2 products like
ScanRouter) supports Windows, Notes and Basic Authentication when used
with MFPs
 It can be used to combine several authentication methods, or to use access
restriction on a group base (just like Windows Authentication)

certificate from the integration server.
 The certificate will automatically be accepted.

Note
 Service Mode Lock is available on machines fitted with an GW2004
Autumn controller or later.
 Not only the SP modes but also PP modes are locked with this feature.

What is PP mode:
 Some settings can not be entered or changed using SP mode.
 Examples are entering the serial number of the machine or changing the
metering mode (counting developments or pages)
 The PP mode can be used to enter or change those settings.
 This mode is only intended for supervisors/ technical support and will
therefore not be discussed in this module.

 There are 2 options when access to WIM is required:
 The network administrator can temporarily select level 1 or 0 to open
port 80 again.
This is not a recommended method
 The network administrator can setup SSL (either with self-assigned
certificates or using a Certificate Authority server)
Instead of http://<IP-address> the URL to use is https://<IP-
address>.

 As the programmable icons are stored in binary fields in the csv, they are
not easy to edit manually.

 Logo adjustment:
 (For 9 inch screen model) The resolution of the screen widens the
image slightly. It is difficult to notice, but if it is a problem, it can be
compensated for by scaling the image 94% in the horizontal
direction.
 In order to maintain the best image quality, it is advisable to create
images using an editor such as Gimp or Photoshop that allows jpegs
to be saved with minimal compression (quality = 100%). Images
created using MS-Paint might not look very good.
 With using WIM you can choose the file name. (xxxxxx.jpg)
 With using the SD Card you must use the folder structure
(.\custom_ui\image\) and name the file insert.jpg.
