Read the text and answer the question. How do chemistry and food combine?

Experiment with Food Chemistry


Chemistry can be fun and easy, especially if you use it
to create beautiful things that you can eat! Here is a
food experiment that both kids and adults can have
fun with at home.
Stained Glass Sugar
Ingredients Other Items
1¾ cups of sugar food coloring
thermometer a foil baking pan
1 cup of water vegetable oil
½ cup of light corn syrup cooking spray
18 teaspoon of cream of tartar 
Instructions
1 Mix all ingredients.
2 Heat the mixture slowly and stir it. Spray the baking pan with the cooking spray.
3 When it boils, put the thermometer in the mixture and stop heating it at 149˚–154˚C.
4 Pour the mixture into the baking pan and spread it over the bottom of the pan.
5 Put drops of food coloring on the mixture and spread them with a spoon.
6 Let the mixture cool and take your beautiful stained-glass sugar out of the pan!
This experiment works because the high temperature forms crystals of 99% sugar. The corn syrup holds the sugar
molecules in suspension, and the cream of tartar separates the sugar molecules into glucose and fructose. When the
mixture cools, it looks like stained glass.

COMPREHENSION

Community Gardens
a A community garden is a piece of land in a town
or city where people in the neighborhood or town
grow fruit, vegetables, or other types of plants.
In some community gardens, people pay a small
fee to rent part of the garden. In other gardens,
volunteers, schoolchildren, or people from senior
homes work together. The fruits and vegetables go
to schools, homes, or organizations that give it to
poor people in the community.
b There are many good reasons to have a community
  garden. First, the garden can help people in the
  community. Volunteers work in the garden, and
  they get some of the fruits and vegetables that
  they grow. The city gives the rest of the fruits and
  vegetables to people who need them. This means that communities with gardens often have a healthier diet than
communities that do not have gardens. Second, a community garden is a good way for children to learn about
plants and healthy food. Third, working in a garden is good exercise, especially for children and seniors. Finally,
working in a community garden is a healthy, fun activity for families and communities to do together.
c If you would like to start a community garden in your community, talk to people in your city government. Explain
why gardens are good for the community and ask them to start a garden in your town or neighborhood. Volunteer
to help with the garden.

Read the text about fast food. Can fast food be healthy?

The Changing Business of


Fast Food
Every day, millions of people around the world
enjoy the fast service and cheap prices at fast food
chains, so why is the fast food business changing?
The answer is that more and more people want to
eat healthy food, and many customers now do not
want the hamburgers, pizza, and fried chicken on
the menus of most fast food restaurants.
It is hard to offer both cheap prices and healthy
food, but some new fast food restaurants are
doing it. One fast food chain in Los Angeles has
different prices in different neighborhoods of the
city, so people with less money pay less. Another
way to keep prices low is to have only small drive-
through restaurants with no places to sit inside.
With competition from new healthy fast food
chains, many of the traditional chains are changing
their menus to include options like salads, vegetable dishes, and healthy sandwiches. They list the calories in each
dish on their menus to help people understand what they are eating. They advertise their healthy menus to families
with children because parents want their kids to eat healthy food. Sometimes new small businesses can make
changes even in a very large industry like fast food!
