AGRICULTURE

overall evelopme t of the st te. Agricul ure antly contributes to the state’s onomy
signifi e
and pr vides as a main sou ce of occ pation an livelihold support t 70 perce t rural
population. At pre ent in the year 202 -22QE Assam agricul ure contri utes abou 21.94
percent revenue t the Gro s State D mestic pr duct (GS P). The t tal numb r of of
farmer’ family in Assam is 2741722 as per agriculture c nsus 201 -16. The size of
operati nal holdin s on an a erage is 1.10 hectare and more than 85 p rcent farmers are
either small or marginal with average l nd holding of just ab ut 0.36 h ctares.Agriculture
Census data 2015 16 reveals that the t tal land u der cultivation was 2 .77 lakhs hectres
i.e. 37.95 percen of total eographic l land ar a of Stat .The data thus rev al that
preponderance of mall and fragmented land holdi gs along ith insecu e tenancy are the
major asons forunderdevelopment of riculture s ctor in state. Go ernment of Assam

bring rapid changes to the se tor and serve the ca se of farm rs. Assam declared 2015-16

Annual Action Plan and State Irrigation lan to dev lop irrigation for the st te in a

holistic manner. Towards th mission o develop the Agric lture sect r, Govern ent of
Assam ave distributed 7663 numbers of tractors, 708 nos. f Shallow ube Wells (STW),
no Rot vators and power tilller distribu ed in the year 2020 21, as ag inst 6521 nos. of
tractors 3540 nos of powertiller, 25028 nos. of S allow Tub Wells (STW) and 74 nos. of
rotovat rs distribu ed in the year 2019-20.The sta e govern ent is als planning o build
Majuli I land, the largest riverine island in the world as a hub of organic products ith the

trade mark in the ame of “O Majuli”. Productivity of most of the crops in the state is very
low co pared to the avera e of the roductivity of the c untry. e reasons of low

product vity are pr marily due to erratic ainfalls and various other impediments like floods,
soil ero ion and s nd deposition in agri ulture fiel s, though Assam is ndowed with very
rich an diverse s il conditions conduci e for agri ulture. Despite all the constrai ts, the
state Agriculture Department has bee successf lto give n impetu to incre se the
product on of food grains by implementing various programm s. In recent times t e state
has see increase n producti ity of food grains and cropping tensity. T e Departm nt has

taken steps to fo mulate St te and District spec fic plans onsidering the agro- limatic
conditions, growth nd specifi requirements of the istricts wit due emp asis on
potentials

The sta e is situat d in high rainfall zone with annual averag rainfall o 2297.4 mm. The
state n rmally re eives 2 p rcent of he total rainfall in he winter season (J nuary-
Februar ), 25 per ent in th summer eason (M rch-May), 65 percent in the onsoon
season (June-Sep ember) a d 7 percent in post monsoon season (O tober-Dec mber).

In Assam,

from th farmers s well as f om the department of Agriculture. As per the final estimates,
the tot l area und r paddy c ltivation during the year 2021- 2 was 23. 3 lakhs h ctares.

cultivation of hyb id varietie of rice n experi ental basi consideri g the high yield
potenti l of such arieties o er the conventional igh yielding varieties The are under
kharif r ce (Autum +Winter) is 99.29 in thousand hectares and for rabi (Summer rice) is
175.00 thousand ectares in the year 020-21. I the current year 2021-22 the area of
kharif rice is incre sed to 123.32 d hectare , Rabi rice is 150.90 thousand h ctares.

limited ave been playing a ivotal role in distribution of ferti izer throughout the s ate. At
present there are 416 wholesale nd 6855 fertilizer sale points in Assam.
