Solving Quadratic Equations That Are Not Written in Standard Form

To transform rational equations into quadratic equations, the following procedures

can be followed:
1. Multiply both sides of the equation by the LCD (Least Common Denominator).
2. Write the resulting quadratic equation in standard form. Then, you can solve
the resulting quadratic equation using any methods of solving quadratic

original equation.

Standard Form of Quadratic Equation: ax2 + bx + c = 0, where x is the

variable and a, b and .
Example 1: Solve (
This quadratic equation is not written in standard form.
To write the quadratic equation in standard form:
write the given equation ( = 36
simplify the left side of the equation x2 - 5x = 36
transform to standard form of quadratic equation 2 5
Use any of the four methods in finding the solutions of the quadratic equation
2

Try factoring in finding the roots of the equation.

factor the left side of the equation ( + 4) = 0
equate each factor to zero or + 4 = 0
solve each resulting equation = 9 or
Check whether the obtained values of x make the equation ( true. If the
obtained values of x make the equation ( true, then the solutions of the
equation are: = 9 or .

Example 2: Solve the rational algebraic equation + =2

The given rational algebraic equation can be transformed into a quadratic equation.

Check whether the obtained values of x make the equation + = 2 true.

If the obtained values of x make the equation true, then the solutions of the equation are:

Example 3:
Odette can finish washing a certain number of dishes in 15 minutes less than it
takes Pam. If they work together, they can do the dishes in 10 minutes.
Let w = (1) whole work to be done

Title: Quadratic Inequalities Week: 4

Most Essential Learning Competency:

Illustrate quadratic Inequalities
Solve Quadratic Inequalities
Solve problems involving Quadratic Inequalities

Presentation of Lesson
A quadratic inequality in one variable is an inequality that contains polynomial
whose highest exponent is 2. The general forms are the following, where a, b, and c

ax2 + bx + c > 0 ax2 + bx + c < 0

ax2 ax2
Example:
(Provided sufficient guided examples)
1. 3x2 6x 2; this is not quadratic inequality in one variable because there is
no inequality symbol indicted.
2. x2 2x 5 = 0; this is not quadratic inequality in one variable because symbol
used is equal sign. It is quadratic equation in one variable.
3. x 2x
highest exponent is not 2.
4. (x 5) (x 1) > 0; this is quadratic inequality in one variable because the
symbol used is an inequality symbol and the highest exponent is 2. (But take
note this one is tricky because you need to multiply the factors to expressed
to its lowest term then can identify the highest exponent. Thus,
(x 5) (x 1) > 0 using FOIL Method
(x 5x x + 5) > 0 Combine similar terms to simplify
Then, x2 6x + 5 > 0 is the standard form of the given equation.

In solving quadratic inequalities, we need to find its solution set. The solution set of
a quadratic inequality can be written as a set and can be illustrated through a
number line.
To illustrate the solution set on the number line, we need to consider the inequality
symbols used in given quadratic inequality.

Steps to follow in solving quadratic inequalities in one variable.

1. Change the quadratic inequality to quadratic equation in standard form.
2. Find the roots of its corresponding equality, using any of the following
methods by extracting square roots, by factoring, by completing the square
and by using quadratic formula.
3. Create intervals using the roots as critical x-values in dividing the number
line into parts.
4. Test a number from each interval against the inequality.
5. Test the roots against the inequality.

6. Plot the roots on the number line. Solid circles are used in the graph if they
are part of the solution set and open circles if not a solution. Darken the
parts of the number line that represents the solution set.
7. Write the solution set of the inequality.
Example: Find the solution set of the inequality

Step 1:

equality.
Step 2: (x + 3) (x 2) = 0 By Factoring
