WEEK 1
1. Meaning of Traffic Management
-Traffic management is the organization, arrangement, guidance and control of
both stationary and moving traffic, including pedestrians, bicyclists and all types
of vehicles.

2. Areas of Traffic Management

• Traffic Signal Control
• Speed Management
• Emergency Vehicles
• Green light Management
• Confined Intersections
• Predictive Light Control

When traffic signals are appropriately installed, they may be beneficial in increasing the
capacity of traffic handling on the road and help in the reduction of road accidents.
Furthermore, they are useful in improving the safety and efficiency of both the
pedestrian and the vehicular traffic.

3. What are the 5’s of Traffic Management

• Education- Due to the role of human factor in the occurrence of accidents, traffic
safety education programs are needed to be implemented. The public needs to
become aware that the issues of traffic and traffic accidents are vital to their
health and safety.

• Encouragement- When traffic signals are appropriately installed, they may be

beneficial in increasing the capacity of traffic handling on the road and help in the
reduction of road accidents. Furthermore, they are useful in improving the safety
and efficiency of both the pedestrian and the vehicular traffic.

• Enforcement- Although the situation may vary between different jurisdictions, the
enforcement of traffic regulations often becomes relevant to the operations of the
network. To ensure a smooth network flow, road users are expected to comply
with regulations. Unless those regulations are self-enforcing (for example speed
control through traffic calming measures) there needs to be a way to enforce the
regulations.

• Evaluation

1) Highlights The traffic of an arterial road near a new ballpark was

investigated.

2) Traffic management strategies for sporting events were evaluated over

five years.

3) Traffic data were collected from loop detectors and Bluetooth sensors.

4) Signal retiming was effective for traffic entering games but not after
games.

5) Real-time travel time can be reported on variable message signs to

improve traffic.
• Engineering- Traffic engineering is a branch of civil engineering that uses
engineering techniques to achieve the safe and efficient movement of people and
goods.
