Chapter 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

Self-studying is a method of students to enhance their ability and skills in learning

their school lessons or schoolwork. Some students have different perspectives in self-

studying – others learn by lectures, on the other hand, they also study through their point

of view such as with one’s own examples rather than the one taught by an educator, a part

of some students practice self-study through online platforms or web-based learning, and

more alike. Correspondingly, academic performance is the measurement of student

achievement across various academic subjects.

In this inquiry, self-study is presumed to affect the academic performance of the

students in their online learning. Specifically, self-study techniques or materials can help

in developing the intellectual capacities of a student in acquiring knowledge and

information, enhancing their learning, and making the students utilize their time properly,

thus producing effects on the academic performance of the student, where the findings of

the study will be based on.

In addition, a similar study highlights the relationship between self-directed

learning and academic achievement. The study suggests that using SDL as teaching

approach to develop students’ abilities is to self-regulate their teaching-learning process.

Furthermore, SDL is the method of teaching that depends on the students’ ability to learn.

On the other hand, self-directed learning is a blend of process and personal traits where

ssssan individual takes the responsibility of his/her learning (Khalid et al.,2020).

1
Conducting a study on the impact of self-study on the academic performance can

help ascertain whether the use of such method brings either positive or negative effects

on students’ learning and intellectual capacities based on their academic performance.

This study can also be a way to help the students improve their skills and knowledge,

while teachers can help students perform self-study and monitor its effects on their

academic performance. Finally, it can be used as a reference for future studies that will

conduct similar research.

The purpose of this research is to determine the impact of self-study on academic

performance of Grade 10-Tourmaline students in online learning. This inquiry focuses on

the academic performance of students who engage in self-study if there is a distinct

difference of those who does not perform this method of learning, the motives and

reasons that influence students to allocate their time in this practice, and the techniques

used in their self-study. Through the use of google forms and face to face interview, the

researchers seeks to identify whether self-studying has significant effects on the academic

performance of the respondents in their online learning.

Statement of the Problem

This research will specifically seek to answer the following questions:

1.) How may describe the academic performance of students who engage in

self-study in online learning?

2.) Why do the students allocate their time to the practice of self-study?

3.) What are the often-implied techniques used by the students in their self-

study?

Significance of the Study

2
The results of this study will benefit the following:

Students

1.) Students will benefit from this research as they can improve their skills and

be knowledgeable about their abilities in studying.

Teachers

1.) This study can help teachers encourage students to perform self-study and

monitor its effects on their academic performance.

2.) The teachers will benefit as they can incorporate the practice of self-study

in their teaching techniques.

Future Researchers

1.) They can use this study as a basis or source in conducting similar research

relating to self-study and its impact on the academic performance of students.

Assumptions of the Study

The following assumptions were considered throughout conducting the study:

1.) There is a positive effect of self-study to the academic performance of

Grade 10 students in online learning.

2.) The academic performance of Grade 10 students is enhanced through self-

study.

Scope and Delimitation

This study focuses on the impact of self-study on the academic performance of

Grade 10 students in online learning in Tarlac National High School. The respondents

chosen by the researchers are the Grade 10 students of Tarlac National High School in

which five (5) students from 10-Tourmaline of this grade level will be interviewed for the

3
survey to be conducted by the researchers. The survey will be performed through google

forms during the 3rd quarter of the School Year 2022-2023 where questions are stated to

gather the data that best describe their perspectives about self-studying in online learning.

Definition of Terms

For a better understanding of the study, the following terms are defined in the

context of this research:

Academic achievement. is the progress made towards the goal of acquiring

educational skills, materials, and knowledge, usually spanning a variety of disciplines.

Educator. a person who provides instruction or education; a teacher.

Face to face. a data collection method when the interviewer directly

communicates with the respondent in accordance with the prepared questionnaire.

Google forms.  free online tool from Google which allows users to create forms,

surveys, and quizzes as well as to collaboratively edit and share the forms with other

people.

Intellectual capacity. Is the ability a person to think, learn, plan, and execute

with discipline.

Intellectual capacity. Is the ability a person to think, learn, plan, and execute

with discipline.

Lectures. an oral presentation meant to inform or educate people about a specific

subject.

Personal traits. (auditory, visual, read/write, kinaesthetic) which facilitate a

student for better understanding and learning, aiming to achieve the desirable learning

outcomes or goals.

4
Self-direct learning. a process in which an individual takes the initiative, with or

without the help of others, in diagnosing their learning needs, formulating learning goals,

identifying resources for learning, choosing and implementing appropriate learning

strategies, and evaluating learning outcomes.

Self-regulated. refers to one's ability to under- stand and control one's learning

environment.

Web-based learning. refers to the type of learning that uses the Internet as an

instructional delivery tool to carry out various learning activities.

REVIW OF THE RELATED LITERATURE

Introduction

This chapter provides a thorough overview of the related research on the impact

of self-study on the academic achievement of Grade 10 students enrolled in online

learning.. The literatures cited in this chapter address various concepts, understandings,

and ideas, generalizations or conclusions, and different developments from the past to the

present, and serve as the researchers' guide in developing the paper. Several literatures

have been made to examine the effects of online learning on student results, although

they often concentrated on larger characteristics of the educational experience, such as

participation by students, satisfaction, and motivation. Although, there has been little

research of these literatures into the impact of self-study on academic performance of

Grade 10 students in online learning settings.

Foreign

5
According to Smith, J., Johnson, A., & Brown, R. (2022), Students who engaged

in self-study activities, such as reviewing course materials, practicing assessments, and

finding more information, performed better academically than those who did not.

Furthermore, Chen and Liu (2021) investigated the role of self-regulated learning,

including self-study practices, in online learning settings. According to the findings,

students who used self-study approaches such as setting goals, planning study sessions,

and assessing their progress outperformed those who lacked self-regulation skills in

online courses. Smith and Johnson (2018) also conducted a study on high school students'

self-study habits and discovered an improving relationship between self-study time and

academic accomplishment. The study found that students who engaged in frequent self-

study outside of the classroom outperformed those who did not.

Local

Several local studies have been conducted to investigate the association between self-

study practices and academic performance among Filipino students. Santos and Reyes

(2017) conducted a study on Grade 10 students' self-study habits and discovered a

favorable relationship between the amount of time spent on self-study and academic

accomplishment. The study stressed the relevance of outside-the-classroom learning for

improving academic achievement. Furthermore, Dela Cruz (2018) conducted a study on

the hurdles to self-study among high school students and identified variables such as a

lack of desire, distractions, and time management difficulties as barriers to successful

self-study.
