STREAMFLOW MEASUREMENT

1.0 PROBLEM STATEMENT

Weirs allow hydrologists and engineers a simple method of measuring the volumetric flow rate in
small to medium-sized streams/rivers or in industrial discharge locations. Since the geometry of the
top of the weir is known and all water flows over the weir, the depth of water behind the weir can be
converted to a rate of flow. However, this can only be achieved where all water flows over the top of
the weir crest (as opposed to around the sides or through conduits/sluices) and at locations where
the water that flows over the crest is carried away from the structure. If these conditions are not met,
it can make flow measurement complicated, inaccurate or even impossible.

Based on these scenarios, you and group’s member need to develop flow rating curve and also flow
rate coefficient, Cd by using compound weir (mixed shape weir).

2.0 REPORT WRITING

2.1 (a) Project report should be typed with 1.5 lines spacing, in 12-pt Times New Roman, printed on
A4-size papers with margins 2.5 cm on all four sides.
(b) The report should not exceed 20 pages (including photos). All pages (excluding cover and list
of content) should be numbered (centered at the bottom of the page).

2.2 Content of the report:

(a) Cover page with list of group members
(b) List of content
(c) Main content:

1.0 Introduction – introduction, objectives, assumptions used and limitations of the study.
2.0 Study Area – descriptions on channel location and other important information.
3.0 Methods or Equations – justifications on the variables, methods and/or equations used,
as well as the analyses.
4.0 Results
5.0 Conclusions
