Method Statement for Concrete Works

1. SCOPE / OBJECTIVES
1. This Method Statement describes the practices and methods to be used with regards to
placing, curing and detect rectification of concrete works and blinding concrete.
2. The method to be used shall depend on site conditions and pour volume. The concrete
shall be placed in accordance with the specification for concrete cast in place and the
main points being as mentioned below.

4. RESPONSIBILITIES
1. BQA Project Engineer has the responsibility for the implementation of this method
statement and shall well ensure that the supplier for ready mixed concrete and its
testing agency as well other team members are aware of the requirements of the
Method Statement.
2. BQA Project Engineer is responsible to coordinate with the GMEC authorized
representative, project acceptor and/or the end user for obtaining required
and necessary work permits – if any, prior proceeding with works.
3. BQA Project Engineer shall ensure that the resources are available to carry out
the works as scheduled.
4. BQA Project Engineer / Site Engineer is responsible to carry out the works as
per approved detailed Engineering drawings and Method Statements.
5. The Site Engineer / Supervisor is responsible to ensure that the work has been carried
out as per specifications and approved construction drawings and inspections are
done as per contract.
6. The Site Engineer is responsible to ensure that the work performed is in compliance
with the approved method statement and other project requirements / specifications.
7. The Safety Officer is responsible to ensure that all safety precautions are in place and
that the personnel on site are equipped with the required and necessary PPE.
8. The Safety Officer is responsible to ensure that the required work permits are
available prior to the commencement of the work.

5. PROCEDURE
4.1 Method of Concrete Placement-Pouring
1. Concrete is to be placed as close as possible to its final position and not moved
laterally by vibration. Concrete is not be over vibrated.
2. Concrete is not to be dropped from a height exceeding 2m.
3. “Cold joints” of more than 40 minutes shall be avoided. Concrete shall be placed not
later than one hour after the addition of the mixing water. Pumping of concrete shall
only be permitted after approval from Site Engineer.

4. If during concreting, ran is imminent sufficient plastic/canvas sheets should be on hand
to cover the entire casting area. If seepage water is coming into the excavation in a
significant volume or again if rain is imminent a water pump must be in place ready to
operate.
5. After completion of casting, enough number of workers must be available for the
finishing works, cleaning and protection of the casted concrete.
4.2 Concrete Curing Method
1. After the initial set of the concrete and when the concrete is hard enough to not be
damaged by such an action, and maintained in a soaked condition for seven days.
2. Laitance may be removed once the concrete is hard by light chipping wire brushing.
3. Preparation of construction joints, shall be done by mechanical chipping taking care
not to dislodge the coarse aggregates. This is to be done at least 24 hours after the
completion of concrete placing or a concrete surface retarder may be used.
4.3 Concrete Inspection and Repair Work
1. After the removal of formwork, the element shall be checked for level, dimensions and
surface defects, any non-conformity will be brought to the attention of Engineer before
rectification.
2. Any patching, grouting or other such compound to be used for rectification works shall
be submitted to and approved by GMEC Engineer prior to its use.
4.4 Curing of Concrete
1. Concrete had to be cured by the ready mixed concrete company and its testing
agency for the compressive strength result.

6. HEALTH, SAFETY & ENVIRONMENT (HSE)


1. All works shall be provided with proper tools and equipment to execute the work
safely.
2. Toll Box Meetings will be conducted before starting the works.
3. All personnel will be provided with suitable Personnel Protective Equipment.
4. Required permits will be obtained from the concerned authorities before starting
the works.

5. Work on height should be properly managed and use of scaffolds shall be


restricted.
