(1) The professional coach Walid Regragui was born on September 23, 1975 in
France, Paris. He started as a professional football player and now he is one
of the most famous coaches leading the national team of Morocco to the
semifinals of 2022 FIFA world cup in Qatar.
(2) Regragui was raised in a modest family who was originally from Fnideq, Morocco. He claimed that in
every school holiday, he and his family frequently visited Morocco. It was at those times when he grew
his sense of loyalty to his hometown, Morocco. Although Regragui’s family couldn’t afford to buy him a
pair of shoes to play football, he didn’t stop dreaming. He used to borrow his cousin’s shoes to play
football until he finally got his own. He eventually got the opportunity to play in many teams such as,
Racing Club France, where he scored three goals in spite of being in the defense, F.C Toulouse and A.C
Ajaccio. In 2014, he got the chance to become the head coach of El Fath and a new career has begun.
(3) After Walid Regragui had retired as a football player, he began his coaching career as the assistant of
the Head coach of the National Team of Morocco, Rachid Taousi. His contract was terminated when
Taousi was sacked. However, his dream didn’t stop there. When he was appointed the head coach of
Al fath, he was criticized by many people. He was seen as an unqualified coach. Nevertheless, he proved
them wrong by winning the championship in his first year as a coach. He also won the title of the best
coach of the year for 3 consecutive times. More than that, he led his team to the title of Moroccan
Thrown Cup.
(4) In 2020, he received an opportunity to be appointed the head coach of AL Duhail Qatar where he
proved to be a very special and talented Coach. He led the team to the title of Qatar Stars League for
the first time. On 10 August, 2021, Regragui was appointed as the head coach of Wydad AC. He led the
team to the title of the CAF Champions league by wining over Al Ahly. After this success, he became
the second Moroccan coach to ever win The African Champions League.
(5) On 31, August 2022, he was appointed as the Head coach of the Moroccan National
Team. Regragui, along with the Moroccan professional players, such as Ziyech , Hakimi , and
Amrabet, have made history. They break the record as the first Arabian and African Team
to ever reach the semifinals. More than that, it is also the first African and Arabian team to
reach this stage without losing any match or receiving any goal from its adversaries.
Following the success of the national team of Morocco, Walid Regragui becomes the first
African coach to reach this stage. Moroccan people gave him the nickname of ‘’the head of
avocado’’ based on his bald hair and the shape of his head.
