I personally like this short story, An Ounce of Cure by Alice Munro because the literary

devices used in each sentence are very impressive and felt surreal. The author describes
the events in detail. My personal response for this is it shows that making mistakes is a part
of growing up. You cannot run from this process before becoming an adult.
The short story portrays a teenage girl who is madly in love with a boy, which I can
somehow coincidently relate to when I was 14. I recollect a glimpse of my past that day for I
was also naive and stupid. I did not specifically tried commiting suicide like the narrator did in
the short story, but crying most nights for a boy my age was definitely not worth it. I still
cringe til this day for all the wasted tears. Even though I find it hilarious and embarrassing to
explain every detail of my story, the author did well in explaining the truth about growing up
and how it is inevitable.
Some people have it worse than others but at some point, we will all learn our life lesson
and be a better version of ourselves one day.

The short story I like most is Two Kinds by Amy Tan. The reason for this is because the
story felt close to my heart as I can relate to the high expectations that are put upon by our
parents.
In the story, the narrator, Jing Mei was pressured by her mother to become a prodigy. All
she wanted was freedom where she can be whoever she desires. I, on the other hand, felt
somewhat pressured by my parents to always get flying colours on my examination results
or else I will disappoint them. Sadly, I was not the brightest student in class. They did not
force me to do certain things that I dislike, but they often remind me to never get low marks. I
now understand that all they wanted was for me to succeed in my life, just like the narrator’s
mother.
When I become a parent, I hope I do not pressure my future children too much because I
understand the pain of feeling worthless. I will try my best to never compare my children to
others’ and support them as long as they are happy and are on the right track.

The short story Everything’s Arranged is a story that not everyone could relate to. Some
people have the privilege of choosing their own soulmates but some do not. As society
evolves, people are more open-minded about choosing our own partners.
Furthermore, my personal response to this short story is that I am upset that there are still a
handful of people in society that believe it is a disgrace to choose our own partner. How
come falling in love before marriage is a sin when love and affection towards the opposite
genders are engraved within us? In my opinion, as long as the couples are content with their
partner and are aware of their responsibilities, there should not be a problem. I started to
question myself, will my parents disapprove of my future boyfriend for an exchange to a man
that I do not know?
Other than that, the story also portrays the stereotypical perception that women should only
be in the kitchen to serve their husbands. I utterly disagree with this statement because
cooking and cleaning is not a gender role but a basic life skill. I really think society should be
more open-minded about this issue.

At first, I quite dislike this short story because the narrator uses the wrong grammar and I
find it hard to understand the content. The more I read it, the clearer my vision into
understanding what the author is trying to convey. The short story symbolizes the
oppression towards coloured people and how the narrator as a black woman herself, went
through all the obstacles and challenges alone.
Discrimination towards coloured people is not only an issue back in the olden days but is
also still an ongoing crisis in todays society. In my opinion, the title ‘A Worn Path’ suits the
story very well. This story is all about looking beyond those fears and struggles to keep
moving forward in the path of life. This can also be seen at the end of the narrator’s journey,
where it describes a diploma which symbolizes the educational experiences and
opportunities that she has been denied due to racism. I strongly disagree that our skin colour
defines who we are and what we can or cannot do.
I really hope to live in a world where skin colour is not an issue and everyone can
experience equality.
