The key takeaways are that the course aims to teach students about gemstone identification through both practical and theoretical lessons using various gemological instruments. Students will learn to identify commonly available gemstones by their properties.

The objective of the course is to teach students about the nature, properties, and identification of main stream gemstones found worldwide. Students will learn appropriate terminology and how to use instruments like refractometers and microscopes.

Students will learn to use refractometers, polariscopes, microscopes, and other instruments to identify gemstones based on their refractive index, birefringence, inclusions, and other properties. They will also develop skills in distinguishing natural gemstones from synthetic or imitation ones.

Course Outcomes:

On the successful completion of this course, the trainee will be able to:

 Use appropriate terminologies in the identification of gemstone.

 Identify the nature, group and variety of commonly available gems.

 Use and handle various gemological instructions like Refrectrometer,

Polaris copes, Microscope, Hydrostatic Balance, Spectroscope, Dichroscope, etc

employed for gemological testing.

 Identification of a cut and polish gemstone by making use of instruments.

 Distinguish different color zones / range typical of gemstones.

 Explain the names / terms being used in local as well as international markets.

SKILL PROFICIENCY DETAILS: -

Synthetic and imitation gems have been encountered in the gem market since
centuries. There is a great need for the people to get aware of gemstone they are
buy, and for appropriate knowledge of gemstone and their identification methods.
 By using refractrometer, the student will be able to check the refractive index of
the gemstone is the most authentic and reliable mean of identifying gem specie.
 Polaris cope leads the student to separate double refractive stones from single
refractive which make the search list shorter.
 Different gem stones absorb light in different ways leaving the residual
wavelengths of light emerging into particular color. Spectroscope is a compact
instrument which is used to check the absorption spectrum of light by gemstone
and is a very useful mean of identification of gemstone.
 Some gemstones show variation in color when viewed from different angle; the
property called ‘pleochroism’. Dichroscope is a small instrument which shows two
different pleochroic colors in one direction, and the colors seen can be a good
indication of identification.
 Synthetic gems have similar properties (optical, physical, chemical) as of their
natural counterparts. The only way by which one can separate natural from
synthetic is the microscopic study of inclusions in gemstones, because there are
differences of inclusions only which can tell if the stone is synthetic or natural.

KNOWLEDGE PROFICIENCY DETAILS

 In a laboratory like setting know about the scientific concepts forming

basis of gem identification.
 Know the use and working of Gemological Instruments in the process of
Gem testing.
 Know how to separate these "fabulous fakes" from their natural
counterparts.
 Characteristics of the stones that may require special precautions to be
taken by the bench jewelers
