Leon Mendonca becomes India's 67th chess Grandmaster
• Goa’s 14-year-old Leon Mendonca has become India’s 67th chess GrandMaster (GM) by winning the
third and final norm at a tournament in Italy.
• Mendonca, who achieved the feat at 14 years, 9 months and 17 days, is the second GM from the Coastal
State.
• The All India Chess Federation (AICF) acknowledged the development. Leon is the second Indian to
become GM this year after G. Akash.

• He achieved his first GM norm at the Rigo Chess GM Round Robin in October while the second came at
the first Saturday in Budapest in November. His final GM norm came at the Vergani Cup in Italy that ended
on December 30.
• GM is a title awarded by FIDE ( International Chess Federation ). It is the highest title a chess player can
obtain apart from World Champion.

Claire Polosak set to become first female match official in men’s Test match
• Australia’s Claire Polosak is set to become the first female match official in a men’s Test match when
she takes up the fourth umpire’s role in the third Test between India and Australia.
• The 32-year-old from New South Wales has already earned the distinction of being the first woman on-
field umpire in a men’s ODI match in ICC’s Division 2 league between Namibia and Oman played at the
Windhoek in 2019.

Khelo India Ice Hockey tournament begins in Chiktan, Kargil
• In Kargil Ladakh, Khelo India Ice Hockey Tournament is being organised at Chiktan by Zonal Physical
Education Officer Chiktan.
• For the first time the women team of Chiktan also participated in the Khelo India Games in Kargil district.
There are 13 teams from different villages of Chiktan participating in the tournament, which include 11
men's teams and 2 women's teams.

2022 AFC Women's Asia Cup in India
• 2022 AFC Women's Asian Cup, set to be held in India, has been confirmed by the continental governing
body.
• The marquee women's football event will start on January 20, 2022, and will finish on February 6, 2022.
• The tournament has also been expanded to feature 12 of the best teams on the continent. It must be
noted that the previous edition of the Women's Asian Cup, which was held in Jordan, had featured only
eight teams.
• The 12 teams will be divided into three groups of four and eight teams will qualify to the quarter-finals,

• A total of 25 matches will be played across 18 days during the tournament.

time in 87 years as the parent body opted for the Vijay Hazare Trophy .

S Sports Minister launches the First Reference Material synthesized by NDTL and NIPER to strengthen
anti-doping measures
• Union Minister of Youth Affairs & Sports Kiren Rijiju launched a breakthrough Reference Material for
use in chemical testing.
• It is synthesized by collaborative efforts of National Dope Testing Laboratory (NDTL) and National
Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER), Guwahati.
• The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between NDTL and NIPER Guwahati was signed in August
2020 which proposes to synthesize 20 rarely available Reference Materials (RMs) during a period of 3
years.
About RM :
• This Reference Material (RM), has been identified by NDTL as one of the rarely available RMs globally
and would be used to strengthen anti-doping measures in all World Anti Doping Agency (WADA)-
accredited laboratories.
• These RMs are used essentially during dope testing for quality control purposes and therefore their
availability remains critical in sports dope testing, globally.
• The availability of these RMs would help the anti-doping laboratories to strengthen their testing capacity.
This will help in the greater cause of promoting fair play in sports.
• It has also been decided to distribute 5 mg of this indigenously developed RM to all the WADA-accredited
dope testing laboratories all around the world free of cost for the first occasion.
Bengal fast bowler Ashoke Dinda retires from all forms of cricket
• Fast bowler Ashoke Dinda, 36, has retired from all forms of the game after 15 years in Bengal cricket.
• Addressing the media, in Kolkata, Dinda announced his retirement from all forms of cricket on February
2.
About Ashoke Dinda:
• The right-handed pacer made his international debut in 2009, in a T20I against Sri Lanka, followed by
making his ODI debut in Zimbabwe in 2010.

draw before an unbeaten 89 at Brisbane that led India to a historic series-clinching win.

• Joe Root, the England captain, sent India on a leather hunt, becoming the first player in history to score
a double century in his 100th Test match.
• Root, who was unbeaten on 128 overnight, batted on against India on Day 2 in Chennai and notched
up the fifth double century of his career – second in three Tests.

• Former captain Steve Smith claimed his third Allan Border Medal while Beth Mooney bagged her

partner from 2021 to 2023.
• The three-year agreement will see BYJU'S partner all ICC events over the period, including the forthcoming
men's T20 World Cup in India and the women's World Cup in New Zealand.
• As a global partner, BYJU's will have extensive in-venue, broadcast, and digital rights across all ICC events.
• In August 2019, the company became the official jersey partners of the Indian cricket team.

Naman Ojha announces retirement from all forms of cricket

• Former India wicketkeeper-batsman Naman Ojha announced his retirement from all forms of cricket.
• The 37-year-old from Madhya Pradesh, who holds the record for the most dismissals by a wicketkeeper
in the Ranji Trophy, has featured in one Test, one ODI and two T20 Internationals.
• Ojha made his international debut in 2010 in his only ODI against Sri Lanka, followed by his first T20I
match in Zimbabwe a week later. His lone Test came in 2015 against Sri Lanka in Colombo.
• He last appeared in a Ranji Trophy match for MP against Uttar Pradesh in January last year.
• He captained MP in that Ranji Trophy Elite Group B match in Indore.
• In the Indian Premier League, Ojha played for Rajasthan Royals, Sunrisers Hyderabad and Delhi
Daredevils.
IPL 2021: Kings XI Punjab officially renamed as Punjab Kings
• The Mohali-based IPL franchise formally known as Kings XI Punjab were renamed as Punjab Kings,
ahead of the 2021 auctions due to be held in Chennai on February 18.
• The new logo honors the liveliness and vibrancy of the brand and provides modern elements, while we
stand out from the rest of the teams.
• The franchise, jointly owned by Mohit Burman, Ness Wadia, Preity Zinta and Karan Paul, is yet to win an

ISSF Shooting World Cup : Rahi Sarnobat Clinches Gold In 25m Pistol
• Indian shooter Rahi Sarnobat won a gold medal in the women's 25M pistol event at the
2021 International Shooting Sport Federation World Cup being held in Osijek, Croatia.
• It is being held from June 22 to July 03, 2021.
• Rahi shot 39 out of 50 in the 25m pistol final to win & It was India’s first gold at the ongoing
edition of the tournament.
• The silver went to France's Mathilde Lamolle, who scored 31 out of 50.
About Rahi Sarnobat Achievements :
• Sarnobat became India's first pistol shooter to win a gold medal in the 25m pistol event in
the ISSF World Cup in Changwon.
• She won her first gold medal at the 2008 Commonwealth Youth Games in Pune, India.
• She had won two gold medals in 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi,
• In the 2014 Commonwealth Games at Glasgow, she won gold in the women's 25-metre
pistol.
• In 2014, she also won the bronze medal in the 25-metre pistol team event at the 2014 Asian
Games at Incheon.
• In May 2015, Rahi was recommended for the country's prestigious Arjuna Award by the
National Rifle Association of India.
• On 22 August 2018, she became the first Indian woman to become an individual Asian
games gold medallist in shooting by winning the 25 meter pistol event with a Games record
score of 34.
• Rahi won the gold medal at the Munich World Cup event in 2019 and she was selected for
the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Archery World Cup Stage 3: India's Deepika Kumari completes hat-trick of gold medals in Paris
• India’s Deepika Kumari completed a hat-trick of gold medals at the Archery World Cup
Stage 3 in Paris.
• Deepika Kumari beat Elena Osipova of Russia 6-0 in the final.
• It is her third gold medal at the tournament.
• Deepika has also won the top prize in the mixed team and women's individual recurve
events.
• In the mixed recurve team event, husband-wife duo Atanu Das and Deepika Kumari bagged
Gold with 5-3 win over the Netherlands.
• This was their second successive gold medal in the World Cup this year, and sixth overall
(Shanghai-2011, Medellin-2013, Wroclaw-2013, Wroclaw-2014, Guatemala City-2021).

• Deepika became the second Indian to win the title after Palton Hansda won the junior
compound competition at the 2006 Archery World Cup in Mérida, Mexico.
• In 2009, She won the 11th Youth World Archery Championship held in Ogden, Utah, United
States.
• She won a gold medal in the 2010 Commonwealth games in the women's individual recurve
event.
• In May 2012, Deepika Kumari won her first World Cup individual stage recurve gold medal
at Antalya, Turkey.
• On 22 July 2013, she won the gold medal in Archery World Cup stage 3 held at Medellin,
Colombia.
• In November 2015, she won a bronze medal in the Asian Championships with Jayanta
Talukdar in the Recurve Mixed Team event.

at the 2010 Sahara Sports Awards ceremony.

• In February 2014, she was honored with FICCI Sportsperson of the Year Award.
• She also received the fourth-highest civilian award in the Republic of India, Padma shri in
the year of 2016.
• In 2017, She got the Young Achievers Award.
