Duration: 5 mins

This piece consists almost entirely of groups of two and three notes which together make up short
phrases. These phrases are played both forwards and backwards and gradually increase in length
with the addition of more two or three note groups thus:
+2 +3 +2 etc.

As the phrases grow so the rests between them shorten until a 'saturation point' of constant semi

quavers is reached. From this climax the music subsides with a gradual slowing down to the end.

Strict tempo should be maintained throughout (except in bar 86) but the rests should seem like

pauses with no external manifestation of the beat by the performer.

The first note of each 2/3 note group must be clearly accented and 1 have staffed the notes accord

ingly to clarify this point.

Sticks required:- wooden xylophone beaters, wooden drum sticks, felt bass drum malleto
