Name Date 02/01/2023

My Learning Objective:

- To explain the term natural vegetation and the factors behind different variety of natural
vegetation found in India.
- To elaborate the types of natural vegetation.
-To infer the ecology of India and wildlife present.
- To value the importance of forest and conservation of wildlife
- To describe the importance of forest and conservation of wildlife.

Key Vocabulary:
 Coniferous forests –forest found in mountains consisting of conical shaped
 Deciduous forest –forest with trees that shed their leaves during the summer season
 Endangered species - species facing risk of becoming extinct
 Evergreen forests - forests that remain green throughout the year
 Mangrove forests - Tidal forests found in the deltas of the rivers
 Wildlife sanctuary - a reserved area that provides protection of wildlife

Answer the questions

1. What is natural vegetation?

Natural vegetation is the area covered with forests and plants without any establishment by human beings .
Grasses, shrubs, and trees are the examples of natural vegetation

2. Name the different types of vegetation in india?

There are five types of vegetation in india
 Tropical evergreen forests
 Tropical Deciduous forests

1
 Desert vegetation
 Mountain Vegetation
 Mangrove Forest
Answer the following:
1. Q1.Differentiate between the following: Coniferous

Forests and Tropical Evergreen Forests

(a) Coniferous Forests: They are found at a height of 1,500 to 2,500. These trees are

conical in shape and are known as coniferous trees. The trees do not shed leaves and

with needle-like leaves.

(b) Tropical Evergreen forests: appear green throughout the year. They are found in

areas receiving heavy rainfall.

2. Desert vegetation and Mangrove forest

(a) Desert vegetation: They are found in place which It is found in the areas which receive less

rainfall and have high temperature. The trees are sparse with bushes and shrubs between them.

(b) Mangrove forest: These trees provide hard, oily and durable wood. They are found in place which It

is found in the areas which are flooded by high tides of sea.

Q3. Name the areas where tropical deciduous forests are found
Ans: These forests are found in areas which receive an annual average rainfall between 100

200cm. They are found in Ganga Plains, Shiwalik Range

Q4. What are the characteristics of Alpine meadows?

Ans: Alpine meadows are found at 3,500 meters above the sea level, just below the areas which

arealways covered with snow, in the Himalayan Mountains. These consist of shrubs and grasses.

Trees are not found at this height.

2
Q5. What makes India a land with a variety of a natural vegetation?

Ans: India has a large variety of natural vegetation because of a large variation in soil, climate and physical

features. Therefore, the natural vegetation of India ranges from tropical to Arctic region.

Q6. Why does mountain vegetation differ with height? What is the difference observed?

Ans: Mountain vegetation differs because the temperature decreases with the increase in height. At the

base of mountains, the temperature is high, therefore we have tropical forests, but as we move to heights

of 1,500 to 2,500 meters, coniferous trees with needle-like leaves and conical shape are found. Above 3,500

meters, just below areas which are always covered with snow, Alpine meadows with grasses and shrubs are

found except trees.

HOTS:

Q1. What would happen if all the forests of India are cut down?

Ans: Lack of forests would lead to many problems such as:

(a) Most forms of wildlife would not be able to exist

(b) Lowering of oxygen levels in the atmosphere due to lack of trees

(c) Lessening of rainfall in many areas of the country

(d) Soil erosion due to lack of trees which help in binding the soil firmly

(e) Hunger among many humans who rely on meat from wild animals.

Q2. Do you think, public awareness is a must for increasing forest cover?
Ans: Yes, it is essential to provide public awareness on the subject so that people think twice before cutting
trees.

3
Value based:
1. Forests are the natural habitat of many animals. Cutting of forests by humans destroys their place of

living. Doyou agree with this? Why/Why not?

Ans: Yes, cutting of forests destroy the place of living of the animals. We know that most of these animals

would notbe able to survive if their natural habitat was taken away from them
