of the software and the alternative options, please refer to the Summative Assessment Schedule

Eduvos (Pty) Ltd (formerly Pearson Institute of Higher Education) is registered with the Department of Higher Education and Training as a private
higher education institution under the Higher Education Act, 101, of 1997. Registration Certificate number: 2001/HE07/008
Preparation for Assessments
A demonstration assessment has been made available on the assessment page on myLMS. This
demonstration assessment is compulsory for all students who chose to attempt a proctored
assessment and will allow the student to familiarise themselves with the software in preparation
for the assessment. The demonstration assessment has been set with an unlimited number of
attempts to allow the student to attempt it as many times as the student would prefer.

Students are required to ensure that they have their student card, identification document or
passport with them when attempting an assessment. The software will prompt the student to
display their proof of identity to the webcam prior to the start of the assessment.

During the assessment, 15 minutes will be allocated for the Respondus Startup Sequence, which
includes the Webcam Check, Software Instructions, Guidelines, Student Photo, Identification
Display, Environment Check and Facial Detection.

Assessments on Personal Resources

Students should attempt the assessments on their personal resources remotely. This will require
the students to download and install the Respondus software on their personal computer prior to
the assessment, leaving sufficient time for queries and/or alternative arrangements should the
student not be able to successfully use the software on their personal resource.

Resource Requirements
The minimum requirements for personal resources are:
• Hardware: Computer with a webcam and microphone.
• Software: Windows 10, Chrome and Respondus Student LockDown Browser.
• Internet: Stable internet connection with a minimum bandwidth of 10Mbps.
• Power supply: Adequate power supply for the duration of the assessment.

Respondus Student LockDown Browser
The installation file for this software may be downloaded at the following URL:

An article including video tutorials on how to install LockDown Browser may be accessed at the
following URL: https://support.respondus.com/hc/en-us/articles/4409607231003-How-do-I-install-
LockDown-Browser-

The Respondus Student LockDown Browser will be automatically updated as needed during the
initial start-up of the browser.

Firewalls, content filters, proxy servers and security software with similar functions can interfere
with the installation, update or operation of Respondus Student LockDown Browser. If the
student’s computer allows full internet access to the LockDown Browser application, and if the
gateway servers allow port 80 HTTP and port 443 HTTPS access to www.respondus.com,
www.respondus2.com and aws.amazon.com/, then most problems should be avoided.

The Respondus LockDown Browser application (LockDownBrowser.exe for Windows and

LockDown Browser for Mac) must be granted network access for any firewall, proxy or filtering
applications running on the client computer. The browser must make a connection on standard
ports to "*.respondus.com", "*.respondus2.com" or "*.amazonaws.com" to obtain the server
settings for the institution.

Assessments on Campus Resources

Students who do not wish to attempt remotely or do not have the above-mentioned required
resources will be permitted to attempt assessments on-campus in an invigilated venue. Students
who choose to attempt these assessments on-campus are required to book a seat for each
module at least two days prior to the assessment by completing the On-campus Booking Form.
The link to the form may be accessed from the Summative Assessment Schedule for the current
block.

Online Assessment Rules
Assessment Resources
Testing Equipment: Students are responsible for arranging their own equipment prior to their
online assessment. This includes a fully functioning webcam for proctored assessments. The
equipment should be tested in advance of the online assessment. Students are advised to check
for any pending system updates before the start of any assessment. If students are attempting
the online assessment using resources from their employer, they must check with their IT
department prior to their assessment to ensure that firewalls do not affect access to the online
platform.

Eduvos cannot be deemed liable for any technical issues which occur with the student’s and/or
employer’s equipment. If a technical issue occurs during the online assessment, students should
keep a record of the occurrence and how long it has affected them. It is advised that screenshots
and/or photos be taken for record purposes. No additional time will be given during the
assessment. Students are advised to complete their assessment to the best of their ability.

Software/Packages: Students are also responsible for checking that they have the correct
software/package installed prior to the assessment. For web-based assessment environments, a
Windows system on a laptop or desktop will be required and the latest version of your web
browser.

Internet Connection: High-speed fibre connection or similar (minimum bandwidth of 5 MB).

Adequate data access is required to complete the assessment.
Power Supply: It is the student’s responsibility to keep up to date with loadshedding and any
planned maintenance schedules and to inform the institution well in advance if the assessment
will be affected by loadshedding schedules. It is the student’s responsibility to ensure that they
have adequate power supply for the duration of the assessment.

Platform: This is the platform upon which the assessments are administered. Students need to
make sure that they undergo all the necessary training on the platform before attempting the
assessment. Students will gain access to the training content during induction and orientation,
during which students have the opportunity to learn how the platform works and thus eliminate
problems during the actual assessment. It remains the student’s responsibility to know how to

navigate the system to do the assessment. It is recommended that students review the training
content before each assessment period.

Students who do not have adequate resources to attempt assessments remotely may submit a
request via the Student Success Team to attempt the assessment on-campus using campus
resources.

Assessment Rules
Students are not permitted to:
• Discuss their assessment with others
• Consult any learning material, whether printed or online, during assessments unless
specifically instructed to do so
• Use the internet during un-proctored assessments, other than for activities directly related to
and specified in the assessment
• Use their phones or other electronic devices, excluding permitted calculators
• Share any pre-assessment work materials they have done on the platform
• Have any help or support while attempting the assessment
• Share their login details

Additionally, students are to remain seated while attempting the assessment.

General
The assessment will only be available during a certain time window, as communicated, such as a
specific day for a specific time period.
Students need to take note that the assessment has a time limit and that no extra time will be
awarded. Once the assessment time limit has been reached, all questions that have been
answered will be automatically submitted for grading.

Students will be informed if an assessment is proctored. The proctoring software is designed to

identify irregularity, such as the student not remaining seated during the assessment or
communicating with someone, which may result in disciplinary action being instituted against the
student.

There shall be only one attempt for the scheduled online assessment. Should there be any
connection issues experienced during the assessment, an immediate request, including evidence
and reason for the loss of connection, is to be made via the Student Success Team to regain
access to the session. Students will only be allowed back into the assessment if it is still within
the allocated timeframe and adequate proof of connection loss is provided. The time limit of the
assessment will not be amended, and additional attempts or additional time will not be given
unless specifically approved.

No additional time will be provided for slow typists. Free online typing courses are available on
the LMS platform to aid with improving typing skills.
