Introduction
RATIONALE
Reading comprehension is the ability to read text, process it and understand its
meaning. It relies on two, interconnected abilities: word reading (being able to decode the
symbols on the page) and language comprehension (being able to understand the meaning
of the words and sentences).
When we make sense of a text, however, we don’t just remember the exact words and
phrases we read. Rather, we form a mental model of what the text describes by integrating
the sense of the words and sentences into a meaningful whole, like a film that plays in our
head.

INTRODUCTION
The pandemic gave birth to the new program of Triala National High School-
English Department, the BRIGADA PAGBASA. Brigada Pagbasa was launched in order to
help the learners develop their comprehension in reading which one of the major problems
of the teachers is in the learning process of the students.
The implementation of Brigada Pagbasa strictly followed the required health standard
like no face to face tutorial reading happened between the teachers and the learners in
accordance in the protocols issued by the DepEd.
Triala National High School’s Brigada Pagbasa launched last August 7, 2022 and
ended last August 20, 2022. This Program catered all interested students from all levels,
both JHS and SHS. Students undergone a pre-assessment in order to distinguish their
level of performance in Reading Comprehension and to identify the possible topics to be
included in the discussion. The scope of this tutorial programs concentrated more on
developing the reading comprehension of the learners by giving reading exercises and
helping them answering properly the comprehension questions. Also, topics about basic
grammar and text structures were touched for better understanding the tense of verb to
increase the level of comprehension of the participants.
The participants were grouped according to their Grade level with a designated
teacher with also specific time and schedule.
After the discussion of each topic, students were given enhancement activities to
monitor and evaluate the impact of learning. Common errors committed were immediately
addressed the next day before proceeding to another topic to ensure that everything were
clear.
At the end of the program, students also took post-test to evaluate whether their
level of performance improved. Upon checking the results, it is very evident that students’
Reading Comprehension performance increased, thus, the program is successful.
