Safety Messages
SMCS Code: 1000; 7405
There may be several specific safety messages on
your engine. The exact location and a description of
the safety messages are reviewed in this section.
Become familiar with all of the safety messages.
Ensure that all of the safety messages are legible.
Clean the safety messages or replace the safety
messages if the words cannot be read or if the
illustrations are not visible. Use a cloth, water, and
soap for cleaning the safety messages. Do not use
solvents, gasoline, or other harsh chemicals.
Solvents, gasoline, or harsh chemicals could loosen
the adhesive that secures the safety messages. The
safety messages that are loosened could drop off the
engine.
Replace any safety message that is damaged or
missing. If a safety message is attached to a part of
the engine that is replaced, install a new safety
message on the replacement part. Your Cat dealer
can provide new safety messages.

Fueling with Ultra-low Sulfur Diesel of these components will help to prevent these
Fuel effects: vibration, rubbing against other parts and
excessive heat during operation.
The removal of sulfur and other compounds in ultra-
low sulfur diesel fuel (ULSD fuel) decreases the Inhalation
conductivity of ULSD and increases the ability of
ULSD to store static charge. Refineries may have
treated the fuel with a static dissipating additive.
Many factors can reduce the effectiveness of the
additive over time. Static charges can build up in
ULSD fuel while the fuel is flowing through fuel
delivery systems. Static electricity discharge when
combustible vapors are present could result in a fire
or explosion. Ensure that the entire system used to
refuel your machine (fuel supply tank, transfer pump,
transfer hose, nozzle, and others) is properly
grounded and bonded. Consult with your fuel or fuel
system supplier to ensure that the delivery system
complies with fueling standards for proper grounding
and bonding.

Belts - Inspect/Adjust/Replace The belt tension does not require adjustment.
Inspect
To maximize the engine performance, inspect the
belts for wear and for cracking. Replace belts that are
worn or damaged.
For applications that require multiple drive belts,
replace the belts in matched sets. Replacing only one
belt of a matched set will cause the new belt to carry
more load because the older belt is stretched. The
additional load on the new belt could cause the new
belt to break.
If the belts are too loose, vibration causes
unnecessary wear on the belts and pulleys. Loose
belts may slip enough to cause overheating.
If the belts are too tight, unnecessary stresses are
placed on the pulley bearings and on the belts. These
stresses may shorten the service life of the
components.
Remove the belt guard, if equipped. Inspect the
condition and adjustment of the alternator belts and
accessory drive belts (if equipped).
If the belt does not require replacement, install the
belt guard. If the belt requires adjustment or
replacement, follow the procedure below.

• A piston seizure
• Other potential damage to the engine
A failed water pump might cause severe engine
overheating problems. Overheating could result in
cracks in the cylinder head, a piston seizure, or other
potential damage to the engine.
Visually inspect the water pump for leaks. If leaking of
the water pump seals is observed, replace all of the
water pump seals. Refer to two articles in the
Disassembly and Assembly Manual, “Water Pump -
Disassemble and Water Pump - Assemble” for the
disassembly and assembly procedure. If necessary
to remove the water pump, refer to two articles in the
Disassembly and Assembly Manual, “Water Pump -
Remove and Water Pump - Install”.
Inspect the water pump for wear, cracks, pin holes,
and proper operation. Refer to the Parts Manual for
the correct part numbers for your engine or consult
your Cat dealer if repair is needed or replacement is
needed.
