A Review of
Basic Algebra
Section 1
Section 1: The Real Number
System
By the end of this video, you should be able to:

List any number in a set of real numbers.

Insert inequality symbol to define the relationship between the rational
numbers.
Graph a real number or inequality on the number line.
1.1 Real Number System

• In algebra, we will work with expressions that contain numbers and letters. The letters that stand for
numbers are called variables. Some examples of algebraic expressions are:

𝑥 + 30

5𝑥 𝑦

2 3

2𝑥 + 4𝑦 − 5
Real numbers

Rational numbers Irrational numbers

Integers Noninteger rational numbers

Negative integers Zero Positive integers

Prime numbers Composite numbers

1.2 Inequality Symbols
1.3 Graphs of Real Numbers

• Graphs of some sets of real numbers are portions of a number line called intervals.

• The parenthesis { ( or ) } indicates that the endpoints are not included in the interval.

• The bracket { [ or ] } indicates that the endpoints are included in the interval.

• The graphs can also be drawn using open and filled circles. An open circle indicates that an
endpoint is not included, and a filled circle indicates that an endpoint is included.

• Sometimes two inequalities can be written as a single expression called a compound inequality.

• For example, the compound inequality 5 < x < 12 is a combination of the inequalities:
5 < x and x < 12.
