SUMMARY, CONCLUSIONS, AND RECOMMENDATIONS

This chapter presents the summary of findings, conclusions, and

recommendations regarding the factors affecting the attention span of Senior

High School Students during synchronous classes.

Summary of Findings

The result of the study determines the factors causing a distraction to

students during online classes. Generally, it showed that there are a lot of causes

that greatly affect their attention while in lectures. These components can be

related to the theory of selective attention wherein the students filter out the

things that they do not want to focus on – doing other activities instead of

listening to the teacher.

The study's findings paralleled those of other relevant research.(Moneva

J. et al. (2020), Geri, Winer & Zaks (2017), McCoy (2013), Paul & Jefferson

(2019), Realyvásquez-Vargas (2020), Balan, Dalisay, & Montemayor (2021),

Stasch (2020), Dontre (2020), Ng CF (2021)) conducted which also concluded

that there are various factors affecting the attention span of students and it

greatly affects them and their academic performance. The participants found it

hard to focus mostly for the reason that they have freedom and access to a lot of

things (e.g. using cell phones or playing games on personal computers) due to
the lack of proper supervision of the teacher. When compared to face-to-face

classes, it is more difficult for the teachers to check on their students.

Through the clustering of themes, it presents that the students are

experiencing hardships in focusing in class because of the current setup. It is

very challenging for them as they face a lot of temptations to do other things than

listen and focus on the lesson. The first factor identified was digital distractions

wherein the most common answers are social media and games. This is

somewhat related to the fourth theme for the reason that when they are not

interested in listening to the class, they scroll through social media or play games

instead. Another component are environmental factors that affect the students. A

participant stated that the weather affects their attention span (e.g. when it is

rainy, they are tempted to rest instead of listening to the teacher) and others

considered a noisy environment as a factor. The third theme discusses how

complex subjects affect the attention spans of students. This is also connected

with the fourth theme wherein if a student is unable to understand the topic being

presented, they lose interest and then revert their attention. The fourth theme

generated is about lack of interest which is the usual cause of unresponsiveness

of students. They experience boredom and prefer to do more entertaining things

and with the freedom to access a lot of them, they prefer to do those than listen

to the teacher. The reasons that they mentioned are: (1) Class is not a priority,

(2) Prefer to do more entertaining things, (3) The way of teaching of the teacher,

(4) Unwillingness. The last theme talks about another factor which is recitation

anxiety. It is said that they are afraid to be embarrassed in front of their

classmates when they don’t give the correct answer especially that they don’t

have a close relationship with their classmates.

Conclusions

According to the results of the study, the researchers concluded that

synchronous classes make it more difficult to focus in class as there are a lot of

distractions surrounding the students. Exposure to these distractions negatively

impacts their academic performance. The more freedom they have during online

classes to access things, the more distracted they are as they lack self-control

and give in to these distractions. Lack of interest is the most common factor

identified by the participants. When they lack interest in the lesson, they find

more entertaining things to do such as using their gadgets to play or scroll

through the internet. The second most common factor are digital distractions

which are usually social media and online games.

Recommendations

Based on the findings and conclusions, the following recommendations were

formulated:

1. The students must find the motivation to listen to the class and

avoid the temptation of doing unnecessary things.

2. The teacher must create a comfortable learning environment and

use interesting learning techniques.

3. Parents should take time to check on their children from time to

time to make sure that they are attending class and to encourage

them to listen.

4. Future researchers should conduct a study parallel to the current

study to identify more solutions to the problem.
