I am hungry today.

Direct speech is the direct words spoken by someone.

The words are introduced by an introductory verb, and then put in
inverted commas/quotation marks.

(Reported Speech)

hungry that day.

Step 1: Identify whether the introductory verb in present or past tense.

1. Sam says, “ I am hungry today.”
Present tense: The words in quotation marks keep their tense.

2. Sam said, “I am hungry today.”
Past tense: words in quotation marks go one step back into the past.
present – past – past perfect
e.g. Sam said that he was hungry that day.
