VIRTUAL IN-SERVICE
TRAINING FOR PUBLIC
SCHOOL TEACHERS
March 15-19,
2021
Prepared by:
MARICEL F. DESALES
School ICT/L&D Coordinator
Noted:
Due to a weak internet connection, we, teachers of San Rafael Elementary school
traveled from our place to Poblacion, Prosperidad for the stable internet connectivity.
On the first day of the INSET-morning session, the Deped Educational Technology
Unit (ETU) with the different EdTech Specialists had a short statement of purpose about the
different topics to be discussed with the whole training sessions: “Para sa Bata, Para sa Bayan
at Para sa Guro! Sulong Edukalidad!”
The training started on Monday, March 15, 2021 at exactly 9:00 in the morning it was
hosted by Teacher Jeff and May, the first thing being discussed by the EdTech Specialist was
how to access the DepEd Learning Management System or DepEd Learning Commons. This
website helps the teachers to download and upload different Learning Materials and to enroll
in online training courses and have their certificates.
At first, we had a hard time accessing DepEd Commons because majority of us forgot
our 0365 accounts but with the efforts of helping one another and our patience, all of us had
accessed the said website.
The first speaker being introduced was Teacher April from the Division of La Union,
she is also an EdTech Specialist, she shared the report about the different learning categories
already uploaded in DepEd Commons she also informed the viewers that we can also log in
as a student or as an uploader on this platform. When you already logged in, there, you can
see different learning resources just like ALS Learning Activity Sheets, Self-Learning
Modules, DepEd TV, Spotlight with different subcategories, ETUlay under the Information
and Communications Technology Service, it continues to innovate the different blended
learning approaches of Education to deliver quality education. ETUlay is a free online tutorial
platform for learners given by excellent and inspiring educators, who assume the role of
facilitator and guide students to another level of the learning experience. This online tutorial
will also help parents guide the studies of their children right at the comfort of their homes.
This can be accessed on the following platforms: Deped Philippines FB Page, DepEd Tayo
FB Page, DeEd EdTech Unit FB Page, DepEd EdTech Unit YouTtube Channel, and DepEd
TV YouTube Channel.
The ICTS EdTech aims to be one of the bests in Educational Technology, teachers
and learners will be equipped with differentiated ICT-based instruction.
The first topic was being discussed by Teacher Mark Anthony C. Sy, it was all about
the "Effective Delivery of Synchronous Teaching." It was done in the afternoon session of
Day-1, from 1:00 pm to 2:30 pm. The objectives of this topic are the following:
1. Determine proper actions in conducting effective synchronous activities in the
teaching-learning process;
2. Device mechanism to troubleshoot technical difficulties and challenges;
3. Reflect on best present practices and self-assessment in the delivery of synchronous
sessions;
4. Propose innovative solutions to the Department to empower and maximize the use
of technology in instruction; and
5. Capacitate colleagues to create world-class technology-based instructional
materials aligned with the framework of effective teaching methodologies.
This webinar session was collaborative and interactive. The speaker asked the
teachers about their level in utilizing technology inside their classroom and the level with the
highest response was 'beginners", why? because of the weak internet connectivity. So, he
asked the Government Officials to help the teachers with the problems. Furthermore, he
stressed that the teachers need to have the equipment, yes, it's true because how can we
integrate if it is not available.
To conduct an effective synchronous instruction first thing to do is to have a Platform,
for example, an FB page. There, we can have our classes which will be available who have
access to FB. Another thing that we have learned are the effective strategies in conducting
online synchronous teaching:
1. Provide learners with an agenda (attached in the modules).
2. Set your expectations and communicate it with learners.
3. Invite learners to generate their own discussion points.
4. Have an ice breaker activity at the start of the session.
5. Have a shorter session but recorded.
6. Use the chat tool strategically.
7. At the end of the week, ask the students to assess their participation.
The next session was about the "Effective Delivery of Asynchronous Teaching" it was
also discussed again by Teacher Mark Sy from 2:30 pm to 4:00 pm. The objectives of this
session are the following:
1. Determine proper actions in conducting effective asynchronous activities in teaching-
learning process.
2. Identify readily available resources to support the asynchronous learning sessions.
3. Reflect on the best present practices and self-asessment in the delivery of
asynchronous sessions.
4. Propose an innovative solution to the Department to provide equal access to
tetchnology in different types of learning environment.
5. Assess the current ICT programs and initiatives of the Department in providing
quality education for all type of learners.
Asynchronous teaching has advantages but there are many disadvantages. Advantages
are: flexible, easy-scalable, cost-effective, disadvantages are: delayed or no feedback,
distracting attention, no collaboration, requires self-discipline and some think they are
isolated. Asynchronous is good if is well-planned and the activities have variations. When
creating Asynchronous teaching materials, he reminds us (teachers) that it is about the
learners and not about we (teachers), so when we use this kind of teaching, we should know
who are learners and be more careful in giving activities, it should be fit and suitable to their
level. The printed module is one of the examples of asynchronous teaching.
After this session, we, the San Rafael ES teachers had answered the reflective questions
and quiz immediately, we went into our respective homes with the downloaded certificates
and knowledge that we have learned.
On the second day, March 16, 2021, 4 topics were being discussed. At exactly 8:45
am to 9:00 am was the Management of Learning (MOL), there was a minute exercise, a short
recap, and insights about the previous topics by Teacher Vine. It was again hosted by Teacher
Jeff and Teacher May. Because of the frequently asked questions on how to access the DepEd
Commons one of the EdTech Specialists, Teacher Mark Papa had a short discussion in
response to the problems of the teachers who had a hard time getting their certificates.
Effective Utilization of Multimedia Materials DepEd TV was the first topic being
discussed by Teacher Joy G. Salazar from 9:00 am to 10:30 am. DepEd TV was one of the
learning resources and it can be accessed through DepEd Commons and DepEd TV YouTube
Channel.
What are the benefits of DepEd TV? Well, it can help a child's intellect. In many
studies, researchers have observed how educational programs can aid in boosting children's
intellect. Surprisingly, children age 2 to 7 who watch a few hours of educational television
programs per day perform better on academic tests than those who do not watch TV. Another,
TV can show children things they wouldn't see otherwise, without television, most children
will never be able to see amazing things like exotic animals, different cultures and beautiful
cities. TV can provide good role models for children. When children watched television, they
are bound to be influenced by the characters they see. Television provides the use of
theatrical materials and techniques; students can see current events as they are happening. It
provides a visual and auditory presentation. Television has a dramatic impact.
After the speaker discussed this topic, we proceed immediately in answering the quiz
for us to download our certificates.
The next topic being discussed was the Video Editing Techniques in Producing
Quality Video Lesson. It was explained by Sir Neil Arvin V. Bautista from 10:30 am to 12:00
pm. In this topic, we have learned about the “Filmora Wondershare”, the speaker thought us
the different commands and uses of this app. Although most of us have difficulties in using
this app, we found it helpful in making our video lesson interesting and exciting to the
learners. After the discussion, we answered the quiz composed of 5 questions and
downloaded our certificates.
On the afternoon session, there were two remaining topics. From 1:00 to 2:30 pm the
topic was “A New Normal: The Critical Role of Assessment in Online Learning.” The
resource speaker was Mr. Salvador E. Manansala I. The continuing threat of COVID-19 in
the country and the world brings about unprecedented challenges to basic education. In the
distance and blended learning environments, it is necessary to utilize alternative tools and
strategies for assessing and supporting learning. Assessment is an ongoing process of
identifying, gathering, organizing, and interpreting quantitative and qualitative information
about what learners know and can do. So basically, we are conducting an assessment right
after the discussion but we also give it to the learners before we started our lessons to
measure what the learners can do. It allows teachers to track and measures learner's progress
and to adjust their instruction accordingly.
There are principles of effective assessment:
1. Assessment must be aligned with the curriculum.
2. Assessment must be valid.
3. Assessment must be reliable and consistent.
4. Assessment must be fair and inclusive.
5. Assessment must be manageable for both learners and teachers.
After the assessment is the giving of effective feedbacks, there were guidelines about this
one of these is providing feedbacks that identify learner's strengths. In giving feedbacks the
teachers must be careful to avoid degrading the learners. This topic was well-discussed by Sir
Salvador after his discussions were able to answer the quiz immediately and proceeded to
downloading of certificates.
The last topic on this day was the "OER or Open Educational Resources Readiness
Review Criteria. It started at 2:00 pm and ended at 4:00 pm. The resource speaker was
Minerva Grace O. Silvestre. In this session, the teachers were guided on how to evaluate the
readiness of the Self Learning Materials (SLM) for conversion to eBook. The speaker
discussed the 8 criteria to evaluate the SLM. After this topic, we were able to answer the quiz
and downloaded our certificates.
Wednesday, March 17, 2021, four topics were being discussed. Before it started
there was MOL from 8:45 am to 9:00 pm, short exercise and recapitulation were being
presented. The first topic in the morning session was "Google Workspace for Education
Fundamentals" by Rowena A. Reyes it started at 9:00 am and ended at 10:30 am.
G Suite for Education is now Google Workspace for Education Fundamentals- a free
suite of easy-to-use tools that provide a flexible and secure foundation for learning,
collaboration, and communication. It protects school community with advanced security
and analytic tools that give admin control, visibly and insights. Enhance with advanced video
communication, enriched class experiences, and tools to drive academic integrity.
Transforms schools with a comprehensive solution incorporating advanced security and
analytics, enhanced teaching and learning tools and more.
The next topic was about the “Poster Design in Adobe Photoshop” It was well-
presented and discussed by Sir Glenn L. Huraño from 10:30 am to 12:00 pm. Sir Glen had a
short tutorial on how to make a poster design in adobe photoshop. This topic will help us
teachers enhance our skills in photo editing which can be used in delivering our lessons
more interesting in the eyes of the learners.
After the discussion, we were able to answer the quiz and download our certificates.
At exactly 1:00 was our afternoon session, the first topic was Overview of RA
10173, The Data Privacy Act of 2012 by Glenah A. Tuguibao. It is the policy of the State to
protect the fundamental human right of privacy of communication while ensuring free flow
of information to promote innovation and growth. In this topic, we are reminded that we
should be more careful in posting our social media accounts especially our personal
information because probably it can be shared with hackers and scammers who troll the
social media sites.
The last topic for the third day was the "Solving People puzzle", which was discussed
by Sir Sherwin G. Lomeda. This topic was very interesting. After all, it was different from the
previous topics because it talks about understanding one's personality and behavior and
how it rlates to workplace resilience.
"Maximizing your strengths and minimizing your weaknesses." was the best-
quoted statement which I have learned from Sir Sherwin.
On our fourth day, we were still eager to participate in the training. Just like what we
did on the previous days, we woke up early prepared ourselves, and still have the
enthusiasm to watch and listen to the different speakers. Our first topic for this morning's
session was "Interactive Instructional Materials by Sir Ariel A. Delos Santos. This would help
us in an interactive way of delivering our lessons, our pupils will surely like this one
especially those who have short retention period.
On the afternoon session of the same day, the first topic was "ETUlay -Breakthrough
in Teaching" by Mark Anthony F. Jamisal. It continues to innovate the different blended
learning approaches of Education to deliver quality education. ETUlay is a free online
tutorial platform for learners given by excellent and inspiring educators, who assume the
role of facilitator and guide students to another level of the learning experience. This online
tutorial will also help parents guide the studies of their children right at the comfort of their
homes. This can be accessed on the following platforms: Deped Philippines FB Page, DepEd
Tayo FB Page, DeEd EdTech Unit FB Page, DepEd EdTech Unit YouTtube Channel, and DepEd
TV YouTube Channel.
Mobile Apps in Education was the last topic on the fourth day of training, it
was discussed by Teacher Sara Jane C. Sarino from 2:30 pm to 4:00 pm. In this session, we
were able to identify the different mobile apps as a tool in the teaching-learning process.
One of these apps is Duolingo which is available and downloadable in the play store and app
store. In this app, you can practice reading, listening, speaking, and writing to develop
vocabulary and grammar skills.
Patience is a virtue! Happily, we were able to reach the 5th day of our
training. There were four topics on this day. The first topic in the morning session was
"Digital Poetry: A Collaborative Performance Project" by Teacher Aprellene B. Marque, she
discussed it from 9:00 am to 10:30 am. According to Jayson Nelson, it is a combination of
technology and poetry, with writers using all multi-media elements as critical texts. Sounds,
images, movement, video, interface/interactivity, and words are combined to create new
poetic forms and experiences.
The third topic on this day was Hour of Code (programming for Women) by
Rubilyn C Pastrano. It started at 1:00 pm and ended at 2:00 pm. Hour of Code is a one-hour
introduction to computer science to show that anybody can learn the basics. It is breaking
down complex computer science concepts into fun and engaging exercises.
The last topic of the entire training was Creating Interactive materials Using
Scratch Animation by Glenny E. Laping. He started it at 2:30 pm and ended at 4:00 pm. In his
topic, he made short tutorials on how to use scratch. It is also an interesting app that can be
used in the teaching-learning process. This innovation will help the students to have more
interest in their classes.
Finally, we had finished the entire training with happy hearts and a brain full
of knowledge to be used in teaching.
These are the pictures of our certificates…
