•BBs Cornell Inc. engineering team collected data for a binary mixture of
Cornellium(1)/Magical-stuff(2) at T = 198.15K (Table 1).

1.56 0.6

2.36 1.0 1.0 0.55 0.76 0.0

For this system, the engineering team has proposed the Margules model:

GE

RT

where:

ln 1 = x22 (A12 + 2(A21 A12 )x1 ) (2)

ln 2 = x21 (A21 + 2(A12 A21 )x2 ) (3)

Assumptions: (i) the Lewis fugacity rule ˆvi ' vi is valid for this experiment; (ii) the
truncated Virial expression in pressure (describing two-body interactions) is valid
for this experiment; (iii) both the vapor and the liquid phases are non-ideal; (iv) GE
model parameters are only functions of T; (v) R = 8.314⇥10 2 L bar K 1 mol 1 .

a) (8 pt) Estimate B11 (L/mol), B22 (L/mol), A12 (dimensionless) and A21 (dimen-
sionless) from the dataset in Table 1
b) (10 pt) Using your estimates for the fugacity and activity model parameters,
compute the missing values in Table 1
c) (2 pt) Compute the excess pressure (real minus ideal) at P = 1.56 bar and
T = 198.15K. Does this binary mixture have: negative or positive deviation
from ideal (circle one, explain your answer using terms in the excess pressure
expression).

is carried out at T = 1173.15K, and an unknown pressure P (bar). The volume of

the reactor (V = 100L) is constant. At these conditions, the teaching team measured
the equilibrium extent of reaction ✏⇤ = 0.64 mol.
Assumptions: (i) P = 1 bar; (ii) R = 8.314 ⇥10 2 L bar mol 1 K 1 ; (iii) the vapor
phase is ideal; (iv) the ideal gas law is valid at these reaction conditions

a) (10 pt) Fill in the missing values in Table 2.

estimate a value for the equilibrium constant K governing the decomposition of

A at T = 1173.15K and system pressure.
c) (2 pt) Estimate the value of the Gibbs energy of reaction G (J/mol) from the
equilibrium constant K. Is the decomposition of A: favorable or not favorable
(circle one, explain your answer in terms of the sign of G .)
d) (2 pt) If the reactor were contaminated with an inert gaseous species I (does
not react with A, B or C), does the equilibrium constant K: increase, decrease
or remain the same (circle one, explain your answer).

(20 pt) Cornell Inc. was hired to design a Flash separation for a binary (M = 2)
mixture of Magical substance(1)/Other stuff(2) at T = 90 C (Fig. 1).
Assumptions: (i) the Flash drum operates at steady-state and is well mixed; (ii)
vapor-liquid equilibrium occurs everywhere inside the drum; (iii) the vapor phase is
ideal, but the liquid phase is governed by the activity model:

ln 1 = x22 [A12 + 2 (A21 A12 ) x1 ] (6)

ln 2 = x21 [A21 + 2 (A12 A21 ) x2 ] (7)

(iv) a single liquid feed (stream 1) enters, and a vapor (stream 2) and liquid (stream
3) exit the drum; (v) Assume P1sat = 69.36 kPa, P2sat = 15.79 kPa, A12 = -0.82 and A21
= -1.67; (vi) R = 8.314⇥10 2 L bar K 1 mol 1 .

a) (6 pt) Graphically estimate the missing values in Table 3 using the Pxy diagram
(Fig. 1). Assume the Flash drum operates at P = 35 kPa, T = 90 C, z1 = 0.75,
with a feed rate of Ḟ = 10 mol/t.
b) (2 pt) Starting from the fugacity matching condition, and material balances
around the Flash drum, derive the pressure summation expression for the Mag-

derived in b) and the overall mol balance.
d) (8 pt) Analytically estimate the missing values in Table 4 by computing x1 and
y1 using the appropriate Flash design equations and the estimates of L̇ and V̇
from c); steps: (i) compute x1 from z1 ; (ii) compute y1 from x1 (show your work).
Hint: the design equations in the notes assumed ideal liquid and vapor. You’ll
need to derive expressions for the current case.
