Issue
Commissioning test is critical for deploying HV cable
systems, which ensures the performance and the
reliability of the power transmission system. The
conventional withstand test may not reveal defects
that do not lead to immediate failure, which is the
reason that partial discharge (PD) test is introduced
during the withstand test (or called monitored
withstand test).

Discriminating the noises and categorizing PDs from

various sources are the challenges in the field PD
measurements. PD testing sensitivity is significantly
affected by the noise mitigation techniques, and the
accuracy of this diagnostic test is strongly
determined by recognizing the types of defects and
pinpointing the location of the defects.

Data interpretation is critical in performing PD test

successfully. Unlike other testing technologies, the
meaningful results from PD test cannot be simply
obtained from a numerical threshold value. Instead,
the PD data analysis involves in noise mitigation, PD
source separation, defect type recognition and
source localization. Thus, wealth of experiences and
knowledge are required in PD measurement and
data analysis.

Project
Techimp had performed commissioning test on a
5300ft, XLPE insulated 230kV cable systems. The
cable system includes 6 outdoor terminations and 9
joints installed in manholes.

Partial discharge test was performed during the test

to monitor the insulation condition.

Solution
The commissioning test was a monitored withstand test.
The cables were energized at 0.8 and 1 U0 (operating
voltage) for PD measurement. If there was no PD, the
voltage was then raised to 1.7U0 for one hour. During the
one-hour withstand test, the PD measurement was
performed at each cable termination and splice,
individually.

The proprietary TF Mapping technology represents the

acquired pulse by its time width and frequency bandwith,
from which the pulses from different sources can be
clustered. The TF Mapping is effective to mitigate the
noises in the field condition, as well as recognizing
discharges from various sources. The sensitivity and the
accuracy of the PD diangosis are significanlty improved
with the TF Mapping technology.

Results
All the six cable terminations are PD free at 1.7U0 testing voltage. However, 6 out of 9 splices in the circuits showed
PD activities starting from 0.8 U0. The phase resolved pattern is employed to recognize the types of defects, which
indicates surface discharges and internal discharges had been observed. The frequency spectrum and the PD pulse
polarity were utilized to locate the discharge source location. Those PDs were confirmed to be within the splice body.

Conclusions & Recommendations

The client stopped the installation work and performed further investigation to confirm that all the six splices showing
PD had internal defects, which were essentially from design issues.

All the splices were replaced.

The Techimp commissioning test successfully helped the client ensure the quality of the installed HV cable systems.
