PREFACE
Beca Limited (1773285) may print this document but not more than 10% of the documents subscribed to may be held in printed form at any one time.

*
This edition of this Standard was prepared by the Joint Standards Australia/Standards
New Zealand Committee ME/29 on Fasteners to supersede AS 1112— 1980, ISO metric

d
hexagon nuts, including thin nuts, slotted nuts and castle nuts.

lan
Major technical changes incorporated in this edition relate to the testing requirements, in
order to align with relevant ISO requirements, and the addition of property Class 12 nuts.
Other changes include the following:
(a) Updating of reference documents.

a
(b) Updating of some tables to align with latest ISO requirements.

Ze
*Employees of Beca Limited (1773285) are licensed to temporarily download this document.

(c) Introduction of the terms style 1 and style 2 nuts to replace normal nuts.
(d) Revision of the identification marking requirements.

ew
(e) Inclusion of a reference to SAA HB 18.22/SANZ HB 18.22 in relation to a
manufacturer’s declaration of conformity. The Handbook contains a definition of
manufacturer and includes an example of a declaration of conformity which may be
provided to a customer.
(f) sN
Replacement of detailed requirements for materials, mechanical properties and test
procedures with references to a separate Standard.
(g) Updating of appendices.
rd
(h) Editorial changes to align with current Standards Australia/Standards New Zealand
policy.
da

The identification marking on a fastener may now include that of a distributor or importer,
1773285
165.225.114.183

this being a departure from the previously accepted practice of the marking being that of the
fabricator of the product.
an

This Standard is based on ISO 4032:1986, Hexagon nuts, style 1— Product grades A and B,
ISO 4033:1979, Hexagon nuts, style 2 — Product grades A and B, ISO 4034:1986, Hexagon
nuts —Product grade C for nuts larger than M36 and ISO 4035:1986, Hexagon thin nuts
St

(chamfered) —Product grades A and B.

Statements expressed in mandatory terms in notes to tables and figures are deemed to be
requirements of this Standard.
ht

The term ‘informative’ has been used in this Standard to define the application of the
appendix to which it applies. An ‘informative’ appendix is only for information and guidance.

nuts, style 2 nuts, slotted nuts, castle nuts and thin nuts with ISO metric coarse pitch series
threads as given in Table 1, and the material requirements for steel nuts of property classes

04, 05, 5, 8, 9, 10 and 12.

NOTES:
1 The range of nominal sizes included in this Standard is considered adequate for most of the

ew
applications for which the Standard is likely to be employed, but for the convenience of users
requiring larger sizes, further information in relation to the nut parameters and derivation of
tolerances is provided in Appendix A and Appendix B, respectively.
2 The requirements specified in this Standard are identical with those given in ISO 4032, 4033,

3
4034 for nuts larger than M36 and 4035 for thin nuts. sN
Inclusion of the property classes given in this Standard does not necessarily imply that such
types are stock items. The purchaser should refer to the manufacturer’s listing for stock
availability.
rd
4 If nuts with other than coarse pitch series threads are required, these are subject to agreement
between the manufacturer and the user, and the thread series should be selected from AS 1721.

RECOMMENDED GAUGE AND METHOD FOR CHECKING THE
SQUARENESS OF THE THREAD TO THE FACE OF THE NUT

d
(Informative)

lan
The nut should be screwed by hand on to a tapered mandrel, as shown in Figure C1, until the
thread of the nut is tight on the thread of the mandrel. A sliding sleeve with a face diameter
equal to the minimum distance across-flats of the nut, square with the axis of the mandrel

a
thread, should then be brought into contact with the leading face of the nut. With the sleeve

Ze

in this position, it should not be possible for a feeler gauge of a thickness equal to the
‘squareness tolerance’, to enter between the leading face of the nut and the face of the sleeve.

1 Squareness of the gauging face of sleeve should be within 10 min of arc with respect to bore axis. The
sleeve bore should be a close sliding fit on the parallel portion of the mandrel.
2 Thread form, pitch and flank angles of the thread on the mandrel should conform to the requirements of
the corresponding GO screw plug gauge (see AS 1014).
3 Double chamfer nuts should be checked on both bearing faces.

D2 THIN-NUT FAILURE LOADS It should be noted that a thin nut is not capable of
developing the full strength of the bolt with which it is assembled, i.e. its stripping strength
will be inferior to the minimum tensile strength of the bolt.
St

The loadability of thin nuts is dependent on three main factors as follows:

(a) The effective height of the thread.
ht

(b) The hardness of the nut.

(c) The hardness of the bolt.
rig

6
76
00
35
43

15

To provide reproducible testing conditions, the nuts are proof-load tested on hardened
mandrels and this test provides the basis for the property class designation.
In practice, however, nuts are not assembled on hardened mandrels, and with thin nuts the
py

property class designation does not give true information on the effective load-bearing
capacity of the nuts.
Co

On the basis of test results it has been possible to establish guide values for the stripping
strength of thin nuts when assembled with different bolt property classes as shown in
Table D2. These values should guide designers to select the load-bearing capacity of a thin
nut for each individual application.

A SUGGESTED AUDIT SAMPLING PLAN FOR
MECHANICAL PROPERTIES
(Informative)

Where tests are required for audit inspection purposes, a lot for the purposes of sampling for
testing should consist of all items (nuts) of the same heat of steel, property class and size
made essentially under the same conditions and in accordance with this Standard. From each
lot, the number of test specimens for each required property should be in accordance with
Table E1.
Should any test specimen fail to comply with the requirements of any specified test, double
the number of test specimens from the same lot should be subjected to the same test, and
unless all of these comply with the relevant requirements, the lot should be rejected.
