IV. PROCEDURES
A. Preparatory Activities ACTIVITY 1:LEAF IMPRESSION
-The students will be needing a crayon of any color, a
plain paper, and a leaf of his/her choice. (See
attachment A for step by step instructions.)

B. Motivation Q1. The part of the plant that you made an art with
was.. . . . .
- A leaf
Q2. What significant role does this part play?
- Makes the food of the plant
Q3. Which specific part of the leaf does the making of
food happens?
- Chloroplasts of the leaf cells
C. Activity ACTIVITY 2: LABEL ME

parts.
Group 1- Internal Structure of the Leaf
Group 2- Structure of the Chloroplast

Prepared by: LYN-NO A. REGALADO(T-I)

FROILAN A. ALANANO MHS
See attachment B for the images and answers for
this activity. For the description of parts, refer to the
abstraction part of this lesson plan.
D. Analysis Q1. Is it important to know the different structures inside
the leaf?
- Yes
Q2. Do you think that the specific arrangement of the
parts of the leaf and chloroplasts have benefit?

- Yes, for example, the leaf has cuticle and the

epidermis’ cells are closely packed. This ensures
that water do easily evaporate or escape from
inside the leaf.
Q3. What else?
- Aside from that, chloroplasts found in leaf cells
contain chlorophyll making the leaf an efficient
capturer of light energy.

Very good. Now, we will encounter the different

structures inside a leaf and inside the chloroplast.
E. Abstraction The teacher will be discussing the different structures
inside the leaf and the chloroplast as well as the
functions of each structure.

INTERNAL STRUCTURE OF THE LEAF

 Cuticle – a waxy layer that covers the leaf which

prevents loss of water.
 Upper epidermis – composed of a single layer of
bricked shaped cells. The cells are tightly packed
to prevent further loss of water.
 Palisade Layer- contains elongated cells rich in
chloroplasts. This means that photosynthesis
happens mainly in this region of the leaf.
 Spongy Layer- contains loosely arranged layers
of cells. Vascular bundles are found in this area.
Cells in this region also contains chloroplasts but
not as abundant as the palisade layer.
 Lower epidermis- usually composed of a single
layer of cells. This layer contains lots of stomata.
 Stoma/stomata- is a small slit-like pore that
facilitates the exchange of gasses and giving off
of water vapor.
 Guard cells- regulates the opening and closing
of the stomata. These cells also contain the
chloroplasts.
Prepared by: LYN-NO A. REGALADO(T-I)
FROILAN A. ALANANO MHS
 Vascular bundle- composed of xylem and
phloem. The xylem carries water while phloem
carries food. At the same time, the vascular
bundle supports the blade of the leaf.

STRUCTURE OF THE CHLOROPLAST

 Outer Membrane – is a lipid bilayer envelop that

separates the chloroplast from the cytoplasm.
 Intermembrane space- the space between the
outer membrane and inner membrane
 Inner membrane – separates the stroma from
the inner membrane space
 Stroma – is a dense fluid region inside the
chloroplast that envelopes the thylakoid sacs.
Calvin cycle/dark reaction also happens in this
area
 Thylakoid – is an interconnected stack of sacs
called “grana”. This is where the light reaction of
photosynthesis occurs.
 Lamella -connects thylakoids together

STRUCTURE OF THYLAKOID MEMBRANE

(Refer to Attachment C; take note not to give too much
emphasis on this, it will be discussed on the next lesson.
The purpose is for students to be aware of these
structures)

 Lipid bilayer – a double layer of phospholipids,

one layer is facing the stroma and the other layer
is facing the thylakoid space
 Photosystems- is a group of pigment containing-
protein complexes. There are two photosystems
namely photosystem I and photosystem II. The
capturing of light energy occurs in these
photosystems.
 Electron Acceptors- are proteins found in the
thylakoid membrane which passes and accepts
electrons during Light dependent reaction.
 ATP Synthase- is an enzyme found in the
thylakoid membrane which is responsible for the
production of ATP (Adenosine Triphosphate)

F. Application ACTIVITY 2: MATCH ME

Prepared by: LYN-NO A. REGALADO(T-I)
FROILAN A. ALANANO MHS
 The Students will be answering a matching type
kind of activity.
See attachment D for reference.
G. Practical Applications of Q1. What do you think will happen if plants do not have
Concepts and Skills in leaves?
Daily Living - If plants do not have leaves, they will die unless
they have another part of their bodies that can
make their food.

Q2. What will be happen to plants if there were no

chloroplasts present in them?

- Without chloroplasts, plants cannot perform

photosynthesis.
H. Generalization As recap let us answer these questions.

1. What are the internal parts of a leaf?

- Cuticle, upper epidermis, palisade layer, spongy
layer, lower epidermis, stomata, guard cell, and
vascular bundles
2. What are the parts of the chloroplasts?
- Outer membrane, inner membrane,
intermembrane space, stroma, thylakoids, and
lamella.
I. Evaluation Please see attachment E for the evaluation

ATTACHMENT A
(Attachment for ACTIVITY 1: IMPRESSION OF A LEAF)

OBJECTIVE: To allow students to make an art by copying the shape of the leaf

Prepared by: LYN-NO A. REGALADO(T-I)

FROILAN A. ALANANO MHS
Materials needed: Crayon of any color, a plain paper (a used one will do as long as the back is still
neat), and any leaf of a plant the student wished to use.

Steps:

1. Get a leaf of your choice. Make sure that the leaf is still sturdy/durable.
2. Place the leaf on a flat surface or table.
3. Place the paper on the leaf. Make sure all the leaf is covered in paper.
4. Using your crayon, copy the shape of the leaf by pressing the crayon against the paper until
the image of the leaf is revealed.
