LEARNING TARGETS
At the end of this lesson, I can:
1. Identify the different kind of verbals; and
2. Use correct verbals in sentences.
A. GERUND- is a verb form ending in –ing that is used as a noun. They are called verbal nouns. Because it acts as a
noun, a gerund can be used in a sentence as:
1. Gerund as subject:
Traveling might satisfy your desire for new experiences.
2. Gerund as direct object:
They do not appreciate my singing.
3. Gerund as subject complement:
My cat's favorite activity is sleeping.
4. Gerund as object of preposition:
The police arrested him for speeding.
B. PARTICIPLE - is a verb form ending in –ed or –ing that is used as an adjective.
-since they function as adjectives, participles modify nouns or pronouns.
Two Types of Participles:
1. Present Participles - end in -ing.
2. Past Participles- end in -ed, -en, -d, -t, or - n, as in the words asked, eaten, saved, dealt, and seen.
Examples:
The crying baby had a wet diaper. (crying modify the word baby)
C. INFINITIVE- is a verb form introduced by the word “to+ verb that can be used as a noun, an adjective, or an
adverb.
*Sometimes a phrase consists of to + verb. In such instances, to is not preposition but a part of a verb form. This is
called an infinitive. Remember that in prepositional phrase, to is followed by a noun. Hence, a prepositional phrase
consists of to + noun.
III. SUMMARY A verbal is a verb in disguise. It has three types: gerund, participle, and infinitive.

I. CONCEPTS
In the English language, there are words that are spelled in the same way but may have different or similar
meanings.
POLYSEME- is a word that expresses different meanings. It is a word consisting of multiple meanings.
In sentence 1, newspaper refers to the paper itself while in sentence 2 the same word refers to
the company.
HOMONYMS- are words that share the same pronunciation or sound but have different spelling and meanings.
III. SUMMARY
Polyseme is a word that expresses different meanings. It is a word consisting of multiple meanings.
Homonyms are words that share the same pronunciation or sound but have different spelling and meanings.
