3.1 DESCRIPTION
The UNIVERSAL network comprises up to 100 stations operating without any central switching
system and simply connected in parallel via a speech circuit on one telephone-type pair by means
of a central junction-box ref : BDV 376 E1P12CF. Within each station there are electronic and
analogue circuits providing the connections :
- the analogue part comprises the high impedance interfaces so as not to affect the line impedance
( 600 ohms ) even in the event of a large number of stations in the network and a loudspeaker
amplifier of up to 15 W (according to the option or type of unit).
- the microprocessor-based electronic part for the control of the connections and displays.
NFCINST*UNI2G/UK
11 / 36
1. PG1 Intercom network – connections possible between all stations in the network (stations
with keypad).
2. PG2 Controlled intercom network – connections possible between all stations in the network
with talk/listen control of station called residing with the caller.
3. PG3 Star network with a master station and up to 100 selective substations (hands-free)
4. PG4 Public address one-way from a station with keypad.
5. PG5 Mesh network comprising stations with keypad (full intercom) and substation with direct
call to a pre-programmed master.
• Comprises up to 100 stations with keypad, connected in bus or star configuration, must be 2
wires.
• To establish a connection, the number of the station to be called is keyed on the keypad, a
ringing tone is heard until the called party responds. At the called party’s end the ringing tone
sounds until the line is picked up automatically, if so programmed, or manually by pressing the
TALK key or keying the number on the keypad.
• During a conversation between two stations the network is busy (indicated on displays) and the
only possible break-in is General call.
• Each station is equipped with a display which makes communication very user-friendly and
one-touch function keys which simplify system usage. There are dedicated buttons, General
Call with pre-announcement tone, Conference between 2 or x stations, Talk-listen, Cancel and
program which help avoid confusion.
• Type PG2 network is identical to type PG1 except that talk/listen at the called station is under
the control of the calling station.
NFCINST*UNI2G/UK
12 / 36
• Comprises a master station with keypad and display and up to 100 single-button substations
connected in abus or star configuration, 2 wire or 4 wire (see section CONNECTION)
• To set-up a master-substation connection the number of the station to be called is keyed on the
keypad, a ringing tone is heard until the called party responds. At the called party’s end the
ringing-tone sounds until the line is picked up automatically, if so programmed, or manually
by pressing the button.
• Ability to test all substations and report the results of the test to an computer (optional)
• To set-up a substation to master connection, just press the button of the substation.
• During a conversation between two stations the network is busy (visible busy signal on all
substations) but the substations can call the master station, such calls will be indicared at the
master by a brief tone and the display of the display of the number of the calling station which
will be stored in memory.
On the network becoming free, the number of the first station to have called will be displayed
and the master station can access it directly by pressing TALK or alternatively key another
number for a priority call.
• When you connect two F1 master stations, both are ringing when called and the connection is
done to the first answering.
• When two master stations F1 and F2 are connected and the transfer function is actived (see
chapter 7.3), incoming calls may be transfered from F1 to F2 station.
F1 is ringing when its display shows : ---- and F2 is not ringing and displays 0 – 0.
Calling will be transfered by dialling 0 or 00 (10 or 100 units network) F1 then display [ - ] and
F2 displays ---.
F1 return to normal state by dialling 0 or 00 again. Automatic transfert after « n » rings may be
programmed (see chapter 6.6).
NFCINST*UNI2G/UK
13 / 36
• This program is a mixed of program 2 for master stations and program 3 for substations.
• Master stations may call themselves with the push to talk on the calling party.
• Substations only call the master station programmed in their M1 memory and the master
station called drive the talking / listening mode.
• During a conversation the general call button is available for all master stations.
• Only one master station may answer to a substation at the same time.
• Just dial the number of the substation to call it and to call another master station press first
general call /B followed by the 1 to 8 number or the wished master station.
• To make a group call press the number of the group (1 to 8) followed by general call /B
button.
• Availability to do a group call is depending of M9 contents of the master station. Its own
group is always available.
• To allow all group calls to a master station, program inside M9 : 12345678 or supress any
number not allowed. Libewise a substation is by factory preset no answering to any group
call. The group call to be answered to has to be programmed into its M9 memory (ex : 12 to
answer to group 1 and 2)
• In all other respects operating is identical to that of program 2 in the case of a connection
between 2 stations with keypad and to that of program 3 for a connection between a station
with keypad and a substation.
NFCINST*UNI2G/UK
14 / 36
CAUTION !
Stations are connected according to the type of program required and the physical locations of the
stations, bus or star, 2 or 4 wire.
4-wire cabling is only possible in the type 3 network and is preferable to 2 wire cabling in the
following cases :
- if the conference feature (substations talking with each other to the master) is not used
- if the stations are connected via multiplexers with radio interface, optical fibre…
In other cases the stations are connected with 2-wires.
Stations are high impedance which means the network must be charged with 600 ohms (charging
in the junction-box BDV376E1P12CF supplied with the system). Take care in4-wires networks,
each pair must be charged and L1 must be connected to L3 by a 2700 ohms resistors like L2 to
L4 (resistors furnished with any master station).
Both the master station transmission and the substation transmission must be charged.
N.B:
If the junction box has not been ordered, two 680 ohms resistors, supplied with each master
station, may be used to charge the speech pair (s).
NFCINST*UNI2G/UK
15 / 36
1) Equipped with 600 ohms resistance, it enables the network to be charged and therefore to
maintain its impedance level.
• This function is carried out by jumpers ST1 for networks cabled xith a single pair or ST1 –
ST2 for networks cabled with two pairs. In the case where the network is equipped with
several boxes for connection purposes ; only one of them needs to be charged.
• Conversely, if there is a very small network not equipped with this box, do not forget to
connect a 600 ohms resistance on the master station connector.
*(supplied with rach master station).
2 WIRE NETWORK :
- connect a 600 ohms resistor between L1 and L2.
4 WIRE NETWORK :
- connect a 600 ohms resistor between L1 and L2

4.1.1 SPEECH
• The speech line (2 or 4 wires) cabled in bus or star can reach 10 Km and more, on a screened
6/10 copper pair, depending on configuration.
• The network is only working with 0Db audio-levels with a BW of 300 to 3400 Hz without
any dry current on the audio-path. Any support driving these caracteristics may be used.
Consumption levels :
5 W station 0,2A
15 W station 0,5A
Loudspeaker in parallel on 1 station 0.5A extra.
It is this possible to power each station locally using a power supply 230VAC/48VDC 1A :
- weatherproof type BAT376E1A48 or
- explosionproof type BAT226A1A48
• It is equally possible to mix the two, with several power supplies distributed on the lines.
In the case of central power supply, maximum lengths of power bus are as follows :
1° Star cabling : one pair from the central power supply to each station
copper pair 0.6mm
5 W station 400m
15 W station 200m
copper pair 0.9mm
5 W station 800m
15 W station 400m
2° For bus cabling (one cable for several stations) :
divide the maximum distance by the number of stations

NOTE 1 : The telephone cable screen is connected only to the central junction-box and not to the
stations.
NOTE 2 : With local power supply the stations are only linked on pair L1/L2
NOTE 3 : With local power supply the stations are only linked on pair L1/L2 and L3/L4 is
parallel on all stations.
NOTE 4 : In a 4-wire network it is essential to cross the transmission and reception pairs at the
master station level, compared to the substation, as below :
The number of pairs or the diameter of the 2 power supply pairs + and – is a function of :
- the distance between the power supply and the station
- the number of stations connected in parallel on the same pair
- the consumption of each station (0.2 – 0.5A)
NOTE : For long distances it is preferable to put several distributed power supplies along the bus
cable or a power supply with each station.

1° Measure with an ohm-meter at station level (master station if network is type 3) the line
resistance between L1 and L2 (and between L3 and L4 if 4-wire network), which must be
approximately 600 ohms*. If the cabling is 4-wire, the escape resistance must exceed 1 Mohm.
2° Before connecting the network to the power supply measure the voltage of the 48V ±4V
power source, then power up the master station, which on initialisation displays the reference
and version of the program, 2 seconds later the serial number of the station, eventually
displaying its quiescent mode text, the station call number and the type of program.
3°.Connect all the remaining stations, ensuring that they are correctly powered.
Then proceed to the programming stage so as to be able to establish subsequently connections
and to set the sound levels of each station.
• The impedance of a unit is more than 50 Kohms but the resistor value of a unit is only
1K5 ohms in 2 wires and 3 Kohms in 4 wires cabling.

For the programming of a network several options are open to the user at this point, depending on
the type of parameter it is required to change and on the facility offered to save time by
programming several stations simultaneously.
Clearly, a single station is addressed if it is required to program its call number, but a group of
stations (or all) are addressed to define common parameters for several stations, to save time.
For example the master station call number is the same for all substations.
Of course, full individual programming always remains possible.
Thus, the next step is to define who is addressed. For this, there are two possible modes :
1) Either by the serial number, in the case of initial programming (network installation), key the
last four digits of the serial number inscribed on the station’s indentification plaque.
2) Either the call number of the station, in the case of a network already installed for a
subsequent routing modification, or card change, for example, key 00 followed by the number
of the station (01 – 98).
The non acknowledgment of the adressed unit cancels the programming state and causes the
network going to quiescent state.
Check when happening the calling number of the adressed unit or its wiring.
NOTE : You must program the numbers of station from 01 - 98, the number 99 is designated for
Maintenance, in the case of a spare card delivered to you without any engineering (without
serial number). There is an exception for a type 3 network, so in the situation above in point 2),
to program the master station key : 00 GENERAL CALL 1.
For general addressing in the two cases above replacing one or two digits by a code symbolised
on the display by G (Group) it is possible to create groups of stations to be programmed
simultaneously. This code is created by keying the button TALK. With the button CANCEL
you can go backwards to correct the code of the station(s) to be programmed.
EXAMPLE : to program stations 20-29 key 002 G (G being selected by pressing TALK).

SYMBOL REPRESENTATION :
In order to match the buttons on a telephone keypad, in the following description the CANCEL
button is shows as * and the GENERAL CALL button as #.
* 5 0 0 0 * <N> <N> *
< N N > station number from 01 to 98
When programming a type 3 network, the number of the master station is programmed
differently, because it must be designated F1. Key the following combination:
.
* 5 0 0 0 * # 1 5 # 1 *
# 1 5 # represents the F character
* 5 0 0 1 * # 1 5 # <C> *
# 1 5 # represents the F character
<C> number master station 1 to 8
* 1 0 0 T *
T is the type of program 1,2,3,4 or 5, (see 3.3 types of program).
In the factory, the program by default is 3 (except by special request).

* 1 1 <N> <N> *
NN = 00 - 99
NN = 03 factory setting (answer automatic after 3 rings or on the button being pressed.)
If N = 00 automatic answer without ringing.
If N = 99 no automatic answer only by the button being pressed.
NOTE : This setting is also concerning the automatic transfer mode time if this function is setted
by parameter 24 (see § 6.6).
* 1 6 0 <Vs> *
< Vs > Volume from 0 to 5 (factory setting = 0)
* 1 6 <Vh> <Vh> *
VhVh = 00 to 63
VhVh = 00 the factory present, maximum volume has to be decreased volume
Avalue more than 45 is very weak.
To avoid one or several stations being blocked following the accidental corruption of a signal
(speech and command signals run alongside each other), it is useful to introduce a time-limit
for a station remaining on-line, which in the case of such an accident helps the system to return
to quiescent state.
NFCINST*UNI2G/UK
30 / 36
* 1 2 <D> <D> *
DD = de 00 - 99
If DD = 00, duration is indefinite and the station has no conversation limit.
For the other values from 01 – 99, duration is expressed in minutes.
2°/ In this network you have to reduce the ringing volume of the master station:
R Opening the programming mode (push briefly)
1234 Acces code
00#1 Calling number of the master station
*1600* minimum ringing volume
R Closing of the programming mode (3 seconds)
3°/.To program the units of a new network, check the 4 last digits of the serial number and dial
successively R 1234 4 digits of the serial number and the M0 memory (see example 1) and if
wished other facilities.
During a programming the display shows coding exchange between and to be programmed unit.
These codes allow technical programming unit support in case of programming problems.

WARNING : if you lose this code, entry into the programming mode is impossible.
Where you are completely lost programming a station ( or a group of stations), you can terminate
the programming sequence by returning all parameters to factory setting. After entering
programming mode and selecting the unit you wished to reset.
To do so key following sequence:
* 9 8 0 0 *
WARNING : this reset will erase any already programmed settings, resetting the station to
number 01.

Public Address
The Public Address performance of IMCOStm is controlled by the keypad(s) of IMCOStm remote
control panel(s), IMCOS 7001. Generally the main one is fitted on wheelhouse console while
secondary ones may be fitted into the Ship according to ship’s specification and Owner’s requests.
Each panel is connected to Program Logic Controls (IMCOS 3000) through IMCOS network and
consequently what happens when a button is pressed is depending by the processor software, which
is re-programmable, if required.
Re-programming can be made on board by a “Factory Technician” or remotely via modem directly
form Factory
In main or secondary public address control panels, PA zones can be easily identified by colored
push buttons with led that lights ON when substation is selected and goes OFF when it is deselected
from main or secondary substation:
1. PURPLE buttons identifies CREW AREAS (cabins, offices, working spaces and engine
room area).
2. GENERAL CALL to CREW AREAS (except for cabins) can be made using crew general
call push buttons (ECR and CCR remote control panels)
3. LIGHTBLUE buttons identifies PASSENGERS AREAS or PAX AREAS (public spaces,
garages and weather deck).
4. GENERAL CALL to PASSENGER AREAS can be made using passengers general call
push buttons (RECEPTION remote control panels)
See example:
Background Music
The background music performance of IMCOStm is controlled IMCOStm Music control panel
normally fitted into IMCOStm Main Unit where are generally located all IMCOStm music sources.
Music control panel is equipped with IMCOStm music monitor which gives the possibility to select
sources (in case of more than one), select P.A. zone (if possibility to send independently in more
than one P.A. zone is requested) and pre-listen (through loudspeaker built-in music monitor) before
sending.
Volume control can be made through local volume control or centralized volume control, in any
case IMCOStm system is able to override them and spread both alarm signals and emergency
announcements at maximum volume according to IMO-SOLAS requirements.
PA zones where music is present are signed with a special symbol on remote control panel as:
