Coulomb's law is the
relationship among
electrical force, charges,
and distance. It was
discovered by the French
physicist Charles-
CHARLES-AUGUSTIN Augustin de Coulomb in
DE COULOMB the 18th century.
-states that for charged particles or
objects that are small compared with the distance
between them, the force between the charges varies
directly as the product of the charges and inversely
as the square of the distance between them.
F - magnitude of electric force between two point charges. (N)
k - proportionality constant ( 9.0 × 10^9 Nm^2/C^2 )
q1 - the quantity of charge of particle one. (C)
q2 - the quantity of charge of the other particle. (C)
r - the distance between charged particles. (m)
Note: Like charges repel, opposite charges attract.

Imagine we have two point charges: q1 with a magnitude of +500 nanocoulombs and q2
with a magnitude of -200 nanocoulombs. The charges are separated by a distance of
0.2 meters. Find the electrostatic force between them.
Given:
q1 q2
+ -
+500 nC -200 nC
0.2 meters
r q1 = + 500 nC
F?
= +500 x 10-9 C
q2 = -200 nC
= -200 x 10-9 C
F = 0.023 N ATTRACT r = 0.2 meters
Find = F
Calculate the distance between two point charges, q1 = + 4.26 x 10-6 C
and q2 = + 3.14 x 10-6 C when the force is 48.16 N.
Given:
q1 q2
+ +
+4.26x10^-6C +3.14x10^-6C
r
F = 48.16 N
F = 48.16 N
-6
q1 = + 4.26 x 10 C
q2 = + 3.14 x 10-6 C
Find = r
