2. Consider an experiment in which a fair coin is tossed once and a fair six-sided die is rolled
once.
(1) Describe the sample space for this experiment.
(2) What is the probability of the outcome that has a Tail on the coin and an even number
on the die?
3. A box contains three marbles: one Yellow, one Red, and one Blue. Consider an experiment
that consists of taking one marble from the box, then replacing it in the box, and drawing
a second marble from the box. Each marble is equally likely to be selected.
(1) What is the sample space based on the experiment of (color of the first marble, color
of the second marble)?
(2) Define the following two events: A. one of the two marbles is Yellow. B. The first
marble is Yellow.
(3) What is the probability of (first marble is Yellow, second marble is Blue)?
(4) What is the probability of event A in (2)? and event B?
4. Following Question 3, suppose we replace the original Yellow marble with a larger Yellow
marble. This new Yellow marble is twice as likely to be drawn than the Red and Blue
marbles. For this question, we consider another experiment where only one marble is
drawn.
(1) Does the experiment have a simple sample space?
(2) What is the probability Pr(Yellow)?
(3) What is the probability of drawing either Yellow or Blue marble?
(4) Consider the experiment in Question 3 (where we need to draw two marbles), but
now we use the upsized Yellow marble instead. Recalculate your answer for (3) in
Question 3.
5. Suppose that one card is to be selected from a deck of 20 cards that contains 10 blue cards
(numbered from 1 to 10) and 10 green cards (numbered from 1 to 10).
Let A be the event that a card with an even number is selected, let B be the event that a
green card is selected, and let C be the event that a card with a number less than 5 is
selected. Describe the sample space S and describe each of the following events in words:
(1) A ∩ B ∩ C

(2) A ∪ B ∪ C
(3) A ∩ (B ∪ C)
6. Suppose that a number x is to be selected from the real line S, and let A, B and C be the
events represented by the following subsets of S, where the notation {x:---} denoted the
set containing every point x for which the property presented following the colon is
satisfied:
A = {𝑥: −2 ≤ 𝑥 ≤ 5}
B = {𝑥: 4 ≤ 𝑥 ≤ 7}
C = {𝑥: 𝑥 ≤ 0}
Describe each of the following events as a set of real numbers:
(1) A ∪ B
(2) (A ∩ B) ∩ C
