II. Activating Prior Knowledge: Answer the exercise below.

Exercise 1:

Explain in your own words the term “tradition”.

III. TOPIC/ DISCUSSION

THE TRANSMISSION OF DIVINE REVELATION

- God desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of Jesus Christ (1 Timothy 2:4).
- It points out that after the death of Jesus, this task fell first to the apostles, who lived with Jesus
and heard his message first hand. The Pope and bishops, who are the successors of the apostles,
now carry on that task.
- Christ must be proclaimed to all nations and individuals, so that this revelation may reach to the
ends of the earth.
- The whole church, by living the life that Jesus taught, also transmits revelation from generation to
generation.

21
1. THE APOSTOLIC TRADITION
- The term tradition comes from the Latin tradere or traditio, which means “handing down” or
“giving over”.
- Tradition is the rich and dynamic process by which the entire story of the people of God is
handed on to diverse peoples, communities, and human cultures.
- The Christian tradition includes many Christian doctrines and teachings, insights from the
Church’s great leaders, forms of worship by Christian believers, and the living and active faith
witness of all the baptized through the ages, past and present.
- Christ commanded the apostles to preach the Gospel which He fulfilled in His own person and
promulgated with His own lips.
- In preaching the Gospel, they were to communicate the gifts of God to all men.

a. In the apostolic preaching …

- In keeping with the Lord’s command, the Gospel was handed on in two ways:
1. Orally – the apostles handed on, by the spoken word of their preaching and by the
example they gave, what they themselves received – whether from the lips of Christ,
from His way of life and His works, or whether they had learned it at the prompting of
the Holy Spirit.

2. In writing – the apostles and other men associated with them who were under the
inspiration of the Holy Spirit committed the message of salvation to writing.

- The apostles and disciples of Jesus were the first catechists of the Christian community.
- They (and Christians since then) have handed on all that has been revealed to them by
Jesus and by the Scripture.

b. … continued in apostolic succession

- In order that the full and living Gospel might always be preserved in the Church, the
apostles left bishops as their successors.
- The apostolic preaching, which is expressed in a special way in the inspired books, was to
be preserved in a continuous line of succession until the end of time.
- This living transmission is called Tradition.
- Through Tradition, the Church, in her doctrine, life and worship, perpetuates and
transmits to every generation all that she herself is and all that she believes.
- That which had been revealed must be preserved and faithfully handed on – or “given
over” – to all generations of humanity to come.

2. TRADITION AND SACRED SCRIPTURE

- Sacred Scripture is the speech of God as it is put down in writing under the breath of the Holy
Spirit.
- Tradition transmits in its entirety the Word of God which has been entrusted to the apostles
by Christ and the Holy Spirit.
- it is transmitted to the successors of the apostles so that they may faithfully preserve and
spread it by their preaching.
- As a result, the Church, to whom the transmission and interpretation of Revelation is
entrusted, does not derive her certainty about all revealed truths from the Holy Scriptures
alone.
- Both Scripture and Tradition must be accepted and honored with equal sentiments of
devotion and reverence.
- The Tradition comes from the apostles and hands on what they received from Jesus’ teaching
and example and what they learned from the Holy Spirit.
- The first generation of Christians did not yet have any written New Testament.

3. THE INTERPRETATION OF THE HERITAGE OF FAITH

a. The Magisterium of the Church
- The term Magisterium is derived from the Latin word magister, which means teacher.
- Magisterium is the teaching authority or teaching office of the universal Catholic
community.
22
- The task of giving authentic interpretation of the Word of God, whether in its written form
or in the form of Tradition, has been entrusted to the living teaching office of the Church
alone.
- This means that the task of interpretation has been entrusted to the bishops in
communion with the successor of Peter, the Bishop of Rome.
- Yet this Magisterium is not superior to the Word of God, but is its servant.
- It does also reveal new doctrinal truths.
- It teaches only what has been handed on to it.
- Over the centuries magisterial teachings have been expressed in the various creeds,
doctrines, liturgical practices, decrees of ecumenical councils, encyclicals, and synods
recognized by the Catholic Church.

b. Growth in Understanding the Faith

- How does your understanding of your faith grow? How do you nourish your knowledge of
the faith?
- Thanks to the assistance of the Holy Spirit, the understanding of the faith is able to grow in
the life of the Church
 Through the contemplation and study of believers who ponder these things in their
hearts.
 Through the Sacred Scripture which brings growth in faith with the one who reads it.
 From the preaching of those who have received, along with their right of succession in
the episcopate.
- It is clear therefore that Sacred Tradition, Sacred Scripture and the Magisterium of the
Church are so connected and associated that one of them cannot stand without the
others.
- Working together, each in its own way, under the action of the Holy Spirit, they all
contribute effectively to the salvation of souls.
-
