2. NONMETAL 6. BINARY
3. MOLECULAR 7. IONIC
4. CATION 8. ANION
5. TERNARY 9. ACIDS
5 TYPES OF CHEMICAL COMPOUNDS

•BINARY IONIC - metal ion – nonmetal ion

•TERNARY IONIC - at least one ion is a polyatomic ion
•BINARY MOLECULAR - two nonmetals
•BINARY ACID - H – nonmetal
•TERNARY ACID - H – Polyatomic ion
BINARY IONIC COMPOUNDS
- composed of two elements – a metal (cation) and a
nonmetal (anion)

NAMING COMPOUNDS

• Name the cation first.

• Name the second ion changing the suffix to –ide.
BINARY IONIC COMPOUNDS
EXAMPLES:

NaCl Sodium Chloride Sodium chloride

CaO Calcium Oxide Calcium oxide
Al2S3 Aluminum Sulfide Aluminum sulfide
MgI2 Magnesium Iodide Magnesium iodide
BINARY IONIC COMPOUNDS
Transition
Metals

- located towards
the middle of the
periodic table
specifically from
groups 3-12
- many of the
transition metals
can have more than
one charge.
BINARY IONIC COMPOUNDS
EXAMPLE: Notice – metal (transition metal) and nonmetal.
Name the first ion. Use a Roman Numeral to represent the charge.
How do you know the charge? All compounds are neutral.
BINARY IONIC COMPOUNDS
EXAMPLE: Notice – metal (transition metal) and nonmetal.
Name the first ion. Use a Roman Numeral to represent the charge.
How do you know the charge? All compounds are neutral.
BINARY IONIC COMPOUNDS
There are three transition
elements which do not require a Ag2O
Roman Numeral because they Silver oxide
have single definite charges.
These are:
ZnCl2
Zinc – Zn+2
Zinc chloride
Cadmium – Cd+2

Silver – Ag+1
BINARY IONIC COMPOUNDS
WRITING FORMULA
1.Write the symbol and charge of each ion.
2.Balance the charges by providing subscripts.

EXAMPLE:
Magnesium chloride MgCl2
BINARY IONIC COMPOUNDS
WRITING FORMULA
1.Write the symbol and charge of each ion.
2.Balance the charges by providing subscripts.

EXAMPLE:
Iron (III) bromide
BINARY IONIC COMPOUNDS
WRITING FORMULA
1.Write the symbol and charge of each ion.
2.Balance the charges by providing subscripts.

EXAMPLE:
Aluminum Sulfide
Al2S3
Al +3 S-2
LCM
TERNARY IONIC COMPOUNDS
- Composed of two ions in which at least one is
polyatomic ion.

POLYATOMIC ION
It is polyatomic – that means it is made of more than one
atom.
Group of atoms that act as a unit and carry a charge.
POLYATOMIC ION
TERNARY IONIC COMPOUNDS
NAMING COMPOUNDS
1. Name the first ion.
2. Name the second ion.
EXAMPLES:

Na2CO3 NH4Cl

Sodium Carbonate Ammonium Chloride

TERNARY IONIC COMPOUNDS
NAMING COMPOUNDS
1. Name the first ion.
2. Name the second ion.
EXAMPLES:
Fe(OH)3

Iron Hydroxide Iron (III) Hydroxide

(TRANSITION METAL)
TERNARY IONIC COMPOUNDS
WRITING FORMULA
1. Write the formulas/symbols and charge of each ion.
2. Balance the charges by supplying subscripts.
3. If a subscript is needed for a polyatomic ion, it must be put in
parentheses with the subscript on the outside.
TERNARY IONIC COMPOUNDS
WRITING FORMULA
EXAMPLES:

Aluminum nitrate

Al+3 NO3-1
TERNARY IONIC COMPOUNDS
WRITING FORMULA
EXAMPLES:
Calcium phosphate

Ca +2 PO4-3

LCM
BINARY MOLECULAR COMPOUNDS

- composed of two nonmetal elements

NAMING COMPOUNDS
1.The first nonmetal only gets a numeric prefix when there is
more than one. No prefix if there is only one.
2.The second element always gets a numeric prefix and always
has a suffix of -ide
BINARY MOLECULAR COMPOUNDS

Numerical
Prefixes
BINARY MOLECULAR COMPOUNDS
NAMING COMPOUND
EXAMPLES:

CO2 Carbon Dioxide Carbon Dioxide

CO Carbon Monoxide Carbon Monoxide

N2O4 Dinitrogen Tetraoxide Dinitrogen Tetraoxide

BINARY MOLECULAR COMPOUNDS
NAMING COMPOUND
EXAMPLES:

H2O Dihydrogen Monoxide Dihydrogen Monoxide

CCl4 Carbon Tetrachloride Carbon Tetrachloride

AlCl3 Binary Ionic Compound Aluminum Chloride

BINARY MOLECULAR COMPOUNDS
WRITING FORMULA
- The prefixes tell how to write the formulas.
- DO NOT CONSIDER CHARGES.
EXAMPLES:

Silicon dioxide SiO2

- one silicon atom
- Two oxygen atoms
BINARY MOLECULAR COMPOUNDS
WRITING FORMULA
EXAMPLES:

Diphosphorus pentachloride P2Cl5

- Two phosphorus atoms
- Five chlorine atoms
Nitrogen monoxide NO
- One nitrogen atom
- One oxygen atom
BINARY ACIDS
- Composed of two elements (binary)
- contains hydrogen (acids)
- Composed of hydrogen and nonmetal element
NAMING COMPOUND
1. The first part of the name starts with the prefix
hydro- followed by the name of the element,
modified by the ending –ic.
2. The second part consists of the word „acid‟.
BINARY ACIDS
NAMING COMPOUND
1. The first part of the name starts with the prefix hydro- followed by
the name of the element, modified by the ending –ic.
2. The second part consists of the word „acid‟.

HCl Hydrochloric acid

EXAMPLES:
HI Hydroiodic acid

H 2S Hydrosulfuric acid
BINARY ACIDS
WRITING FORMULA
1. The name will tell that it is definitely a binary acid. Write
the symbol for hydrogen and the nonmetal element.
2. Balance the charges by supplying subscripts.
EXAMPLE:
Hydrophosphoric acid
H3P
H +1 P-3
TERNARY ACIDS
- begin with hydrogen since they are “acids”
- attached to the hydrogen is a polyatomic ion
- Hydrogen – polyatomic ion
NAMING COMPOUND
1. First Category: If the polyatomic ion has a
suffix of –ate or –ide
2. Second Category: If the polyatomic ion has
a suffix of –ite
TERNARY ACIDS
NAMING COMPOUND
First Category: If the polyatomic ion has a suffix of –ate or –ide, use:
suffix
