Answer ALL questions.
1. This experiment is designed to investigate anaerobic respiration by yeast. Read the instructions
carefully before commencing the experiment.
Procedure
(i) You have been provided with 10 ml of sugar solution prepared using boiled water which
was cooled. Add the yeast provided to the sugar solution in the boiling tube and stir with
the glass rod.
(ii) Slowly add the liquid paraffin to the mixture using the teat pipette, then immediately cover
with the rubber bung and set up the apparatus as shown in Figure 1.
(iii) Leave the apparatus in the test tube rack at room temperature for 30 minutes.
(iv) Proceed to Question 2 or 3 during this time.

2. A group of biologists is asked to conduct an ecological study of a swamp that is to be drained and
used for the construction of a shopping mall.
(a) The biologists use ropes to set up line transects, as well as 100 m2 quadrats, to conduct
the study. The data relating to two of the mangrove species counted in ten quadrats at
ten-metre intervals along the line transect are presented in Table 1.
Red mangrove 50 40 25 10 0 0 0 0 0 0
Black mangrove 0 0 0 5 30 80 40 20 0 0
(i) Describe how the line transect is set up to collect the data presented in Table 1.
