Calculations

Check each calculation for the following:

Job name and number.

Date.

Designer’s name.

Title or designation of what the calculation is for.

Check all calculations for use of correct formulas and


equations, correct factors, reasonable assumptions, correct
arithmetic, and reasonable answers.

Calculations for sizes and capacities are used on drawings


and in specifications are formally documented.

Pipe Sizes and Materials

Check fluid velocities and pressure drops for conformance to


requirements, codes, and standards.

Pipe materials and fittings are suitable for the application.


Do they meet NFPA and UL/FM approval?

Pipe wall thickness conforms with applicable codes.

Sprinklers

Check for proper sprinkler head types, orifice size (K factor)

Check detector type, spacings and locations.

Hose stations

Check that locations and spacings are in accordance with


code.

Check hose length, diameter and material.

Check valve type and size.

Piping system feeding hose stations is of adequate size to


allow water flow rate and pressure drop in accordance with
codes.

Portable Extinguishers

Check type, locations and size. Check inspection dates.

Check cabinet type.

Hose Houses

Check to see that each hose house has the proper equipment.

Check that locations are correct.

Fire Pump

Check fire pump for required GPM, outlet pressure and


NPSH.

Check that proper accessories have been provided.

Check jockey pump for required GPM, outlet pressure and


NPSH.

The unit UL/FM is approved.

Pump cooling has been provided for.

Fire Suppression Systems

Confirm that the proper fire suppression system is used for


the area and/or equipment to be covered.

Verify that required area and/or equipment is properly


covered.

Alarm Systems

Confirm that proper alarms are installed.

Check that alarm signals are sounding or are visual at


designated places.

Check panels for alarm-reset capacities.

DRAFTING
Symbol Legend and Drawing List

There is a legend of symbols and abbreviations.

All symbols are used on drawings and are listed in the


legend.

Check that fire protection drawing list is complete, accurate,


and up-to-date.

Uniformity and Consistency

The same symbols are used on all of the drawings and agree
with the legend.

Lettering and linework is uniform throughout the drawings

drawings.

Sections do agree with plans in equipment shown, size of


equipment, orientation and location.

Requirements for monorails, cranes, etc. are shown on plans


and in sections.

Identification

Check room names and/or numbers with architectural plans


and/or general arrangements.

Check column lines and numbers.

There is a north arrow for each plan.

There are titles and graphic scales on all plans, elevations,


sections, details and diagrams.

Section cutting lines and numbers are shown for all sections
and in accordance with project drafting standards.

Reference to other drawings are correct.

The floor, equipment, pipe and roof elevations are called out
on the plans and there is a riser diagram that indicates
relative heights.

There is a key plan (with area designation if applicable) on all


plans.

Standards

Project drafting standards are adhered to.

Standard general notes are provided.

Each drawing does have a copyright stamp.

Identification

Fire protection equipment is identified by notes or symbols


on plans and sections.

Equipment names, numbers and locations do agree with


those in the equipment list and on other department’s
general arrangement drawings.

Accessibility, Clearance, and Interference

Provisions have been made for installation or removal of fire


protection equipment.

There is clearance for servicing equipment.

Drawing and testing means are provided.

Interference between equipment and any of the following:

Building structure and framing.

Building equipment, doors, etc.

Process piping.

Process equipment.

Electrical fixtures, cable trays, conduit racks, and equipment.

Control systems equipment.

Plumbing fixtures and equipment.

HVAC equipment and ductwork.

Material handling equipment.

Other fire protection equipment and piping.

Capacities and Sizes

Capacity or size of each piece of equipment is indicated by


note, schedule or specification.

Coordination with Specifications

Check the names, numbers and types of equipment shown on


the drawings and schedules with those in specifications.

Verify all references to the specifications.

Related Work by Others

Check the drawings of other departments for indication of items as follows, and report discrepancies to
the particular department:

Architectural:

Check locations and sizes of openings required in floors, roof


and walls.

Access has been provided to all fire protection equipment,


such as ladder to roof, ceiling access doors, catwalks, fire
department connections, inspection test connects, etc.

Check ceiling heights versus equipment and piping.

Check locations of walls, doors, and windows.

Structural:

Verify that locations of slabs, platforms, or special steel


provided for fire protection equipment are as required.

Check locations and size of openings required in slabs, walls,


roofs, and curbs for same (if required).

Verify column spacing, orientation and designation.

Check crane/monorail requirements, locations, elevations,


lengths, clearances, width of beam flange, etc.

Check interior and exterior wind bracing and gusset plates


relative to fire protection equipment and piping.

Investigate effect of building expansion joints relative to fire


protection equipment arrangements and piping.

Verify foundation locations versus equipment locations and


pipe entrance locations.

Verify that structural framing is protected.

Electrical:

Check locations of required drains and vents.

Check for drainage from contaminated areas.

Check that water tap and equipment are correct.

HVAC:

Review areas containing wide ductwork for possible special


design to permit proper coverage at floor level.

Check requirements of fire dampers inside ducts penetrating


fire walls. Also check for required duct detectors.

Equipment does shut down when required.

Material Handling:

Verify that material handling equipment penetrative fire


walls is protected with electrical duct-off, spray system,
guillotine or other system to prevent spread of fire.

Check these sections to confirm that they have been tailored


to this project.

Check the drawings listed in the specification against the


drawing numbers.

Materials and Equipment Sections

Make sure that there is a specification which conforms to


code requirements for each new piece of equipment and each
material shown on the drawings.

Project Completion Sections (Testing, balancing and adjusting, operating and maintenance data,
guarantees)

Check these sections to confirm that they have been tailored


to this project.

General

Check through the specifications for errors in typing,


spelling, grammar, etc.

Where reference is made to the drawings, check the drawings


to verify.
