3. Genre/Type of Book: Science fiction, Adventure fiction, Dystopian Fiction, War story
Body
2. Who/what is the book about? The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes book focuses on young Coriolanus
Snow, who we saw as the tyrannical president of Panem in the OG Hunger Games book and movie
series. At age 18, Snow is chosen to be a mentor to Lucy Gray Baird, the girl tribute from impoverished
District 12, during the 10th Hunger Games.
3. Summarize Plot/Climax
The novel follows the journey of 18-year-old Coriolanus Snow and is set in the Hunger Games universe
64 years before the events of the original Hunger Games trilogy. The book opens on Harvest Morning of
the 10th Hunger Games. This predates the life of original trilogy protagonist Katniss Everdeen.
Historically, the book examines Panem's reconstruction period, ten years after the district's first
rebellion, commonly referred to as the Dark Ages. With the aftermath of a war-torn country struggling
to get back on its feet and the game holding up to win power, there's plenty of fertile ground for
characters to grapple with moral issues on what it takes to ignore them. Coriolanus Snow is one of the
24 Academy students selected to direct the 10th annual Hunger Games tribute. His family is going
through a difficult time and he has been assigned as a mentor for a female tribute by District 12.
Coriolanus Snow was a tyrannical president of Panem. In his youth, he was known by the nickname
Coryo, originally given to him by Tigris. The once wealthy and powerful Snow family but not anymore
after the deaths of Coriolanus' mother and military father, who were killed during a failed district
rebellion. Coriolanus and his cousin Tigris live with his grandmother, whom he calls “Grandma’am.”
While the novel can be read as a coming-of-age story, it is also an origin story that tells the transition
from a seemingly ordinary person to a villain. Before becoming president, he attended the Academy in
the Capitol, where he mentored the winning tribute of the 10th Hunger Games. He later moved on to
advanced military studies at the University. He also served a brief stint in the Peacekeepers,
demonstrating such aptitude that he tested successfully for an elite program to become an officer with
the Peacekeepers, though ultimately he did not pursue this path. While attending the University and
studying advanced military strategy, he also served as an apprentice Gamemaker, quickly instituting
several new reforms to the Games, including the creation of the Victors' Village. This is a girl named Lucy
Gray Beard from a singing and playing group called Covey. Lucy Gray Baird was the female tribute from
District 12 in the 10th Hunger Games. Her mentor was Coriolanus Snow, a top-performing student at the
Academy. She was the victor of the Games, and was a Capitol favorite. A member of the Covey, she and
her kin were trapped in District 12 following the First Rebellion, but originally traveled throughout
Panem. She was formerly in a relationship with Billy Taupe and Coriolanus Snow. He quickly bonds with
the girl, but things go haywire before the game even begins: Arachne Crane, one of her chosen mentors,
Crane is killed by her own tribute, leaving Capitol in her arena. Several tributes and mentors died from
injuries in the bombing.
C. Conclusion
As the game progresses, many tributes failed to escape the game. The District 1 Tributes was shot while
trying to escape, and the female District 2 Tribute fell to her death. Sejanus, Marcus' tribute is
completely gone. Coriolanus is happy to see Lucy her Gray is safe, but wonders how she can repay her
for saving her own life. I'm here. At the end of the Games, Lucy Gray is announced the victor, but
Coriolanus's own triumphs are short-lived. He's accused of manipulating the Games and stealing from
the Academy, and he's sent to District 12 to be a Peacekeeper as punishment. The Ballad of Songbirds
and Snakes. Since the book surrounds into Coriolanus’s point of view, Lucy’s story by the end of novel
remains a mystery. There are theories surrounding Lucy; maybe she got shot, commits suicide,
somehow survives Snow, or simply disappears, she is free, and there is nothing Snow can do to cage her.
D. Evaluation
I enjoyed the book itself, it is wonderfully written since it is a prequel for the Hunger Games trilogy. I am
already familiarized what the story is about or who are the characters in this new story. The novel
surrounds to the main villain of the trilogy. The book uncovers the background of the antagonist’s back
story and a whole new past is revealed. However, the book sympathizes Snow even though he is the
main antagonist of the said sequel trilogy, still he is the main character of the prequel. Furthermore, a
new character from the novel was introduced; Lucy Gray Baird. She is a well-written character and her
story remains a mystery in the end. Left with solving theories about what happened in the end I think
people would love reading The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, the book is very good and would like to
recommend it some people who loves these kind of genres.
