Presentation Outline

• What is BIM?

• BIM Adoption in Asia and ASEAN

• BIM Benefits to AEC Industry

• BIM Adoption

• BIM Perception in Cambodia

• Technical Working Group for BIM Technology

2
What is BIM?

• Building Information Modeling (BIM) is a process

involving the generation and management of digital
representations of physical and functional
characteristics of a facility. Building Information
Models (BIMs) are files (often but not always in
proprietary formats and containing proprietary data)
which can be exchanged or networked to support
decision-making about a facility during its life-cycle.

3
History of BIM

• 1974, the concept of BIM was introduced by Eastman,

Charles; Fisher, David; Lafue, Gilles; Lividini, Joseph;
Stoker, Douglas; Yessios, Christos, Carnegie-Mellon
University, USA.
• 1987, the first implementation of BIM was under
the Virtual Building concept by Graphisoft’s ArchiCAD.
• 1992, the term Building Information Model was first
appeared in a paper by G.A. van Nederveen and F. P.
Tolman, Delft University of Technology, Niederland.

SM: Introduction to BIM

Dr. Mom Mony
History of BIM

• Since 2002, Autodesk or Vectorworks terms BIM as

"Building Information Modeling”; Graphisoft as "Virtual
Building”; Bentley Systems as "Integrated Project
Models” to facilitate exchange and interoperability of
information in digital format.

5
Trend of BIM Use in Asia

• Hong Kong: in 2009, the Hong Kong Institute of BIM

was established; in 2013, BuildingSmart Hong Kong was
inaugurated; from 2014/2015, Hong Kong Housing
Authority requires full BIM-based projects.
• Japan: in 2010, Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and
Transport (MLIT) announced “the start of BIM pilot
projects for government buildings and repairs”. In 2012,
Japan Institute of Architects released BIM guidelines.
MLIT began to study BIM modeling rules.
• South Korea: in the late 2000s, Korean industries paid
attention to BIM; in 2008, the first industrial level
conference for BIM was held; since 2010, Korean
government gradually increases the scope of BIM-based
projects.

6
Trend of BIM Use in Asia

• Taiwan: in 2010, Research Center for Building and

Infrastructure Information Modeling and Management
(NTU BIM Center) was established; since 2012, Public
Construction Committee, Executive Yuan, requires all
public projects with full BIM.
• India: BIM users are about 22%. Indian BIM
professionals offer outsourcing for USA, Australia, UK,
Middle East, Singapore, North Africa.
• Iran: in 2012, the Iran BIM association was founded
from 5 PEs to support construction engineering
management decision-making.

7
Trend of BIM Use in ASEAN

• Singapore. the Building and Construction Authority

(BCA) requires BIM-based architectural submission
by 2013; BIM-based structural and MEP
submissions by 2014; and full BIM-based package
for projects of 5,000 square meters by 2015.
• Malaysia. 2016 BIM adopted 17% and 2021 rose
to 55% and the government aims 80% by 2025.
Construction Industry Development Board
(CIDB) mandated certain projects in 2020.

8
Trend of BIM Use in ASEAN

• Vietnam. 2016 the decision on application of BIM issued

by the Prime Minister’s Office. 2021 Ministry of
Construction, Vietnam published the BIM Adoption Plan
in which the technology will be fully adopted by the year
2025-30.
• Thailand. No commitment from Thai government. 2021
the BIM institute of Thailand was established by the
Engineering Institution of Thailand (EIT) and the same
year, Thai Building Information Modeling Association
(TBIM) was founded.

9
Trend of BIM Use in ASEAN

Cambodia BIM 2018

In 2018 BIM Research
Center was established
at Western University,
Cambodia. However,
only a few Cambodian
were interested in BIM
In 2023 BIM Research
Center is being
Established by
the National Council
for Building Technical
Regulations (NCBTR).

10
BIM Benefits and Barriers

Office
Construction
Benefits: marketing Current focus: BIM site : lack of client
Barriers
tool, accurate software, internal demand, not sufficient time to
construction collaborative BIM evaluate, investment cost,
documents, better procedure. lack of formal ROI-on-BIM
communication b/w all Trend: BIM capability, measurement, change in
parties, reduced collaborative BIM workflow rather than time or
number of field processes with externalmoney, increased skills, lack
coordination problems.. parties of competition, less efficient
for smaller projects, concerns
of insurance and liability.
11
BIM Benefits

• BIM Benefits (positive impacts)

• Prevent errors by clash / conflict detection through
Visualization
• Reduce information loss by allowing to add their own
specific knowledge, track changes and retrieve
information in a Single Model-based Technology
linked with Project Information Database
• Reduce time required to complete construction
through sufficient modeling developed in the Design
Development Phase

12
BIM Barriers

• BIM Negative Impacts

• Resistance to change
• Individuals: knowledge and skills
• Corporate leaders: benefits to be invested?
• Organizational culture: status quo to new process
(reengineering)

Respondents Comments/Suggestions

• We should move to BIM as globalization technology

• Create the Standard of BIM and provide the certificate for
which building choose BIM Technology for construction.
• BIM is a complete concept but requires just a slightly
larger initial investment than the traditional method
(high specification of work equipment and qualified
human resources). The integration of its concept can be
done from national education (license class, etc.) to the
professional level (training center, etc.). After 5 years of
practice in Cambodia, we see its usefulness and we
continue to train staff because it could be profitable.

27
Respondents Comments/Suggestions

• I would like to Request to MLMUPC to Create law For all

Company that Design And Build Tall Building in
Cambodia Must to use BIM( Can start From 2025).
Especially For All Public Buildings Need Company Used
BIM for Desing and Build to avoid missed Coordination
and take time that wastage a lots of Money. we can save
that wastage money to develop our country. Thanks.
• Bim adoption is the best for details design stage, and
afterwards

28
Respondents Comments/Suggestions

• MLMUPC should regulate BIM at least for public projects,

real estate development projects and foreign funded
projects. MLMUPC should leverage of BIM technology as
their digital technology in architecture, structural
engineering, MEP engineering and construction.
• I supported NCBTR in developing the BIM technology in
Cambodia, since it has been practiced extensively
worldwide in AEC industry, including India, Viet Nam and
Thailand.

29
Respondents Comments/Suggestions

• Good to promote BIM to all concerned construction

stakeholders in Cambodia. The current consultant
company in Thailand that I am working for, requires all
contractors use BIM.
