A closed book lay by his side as Troubled stared at the wooden floor. Is something wrong, Troubled? asked Tremor. Troubled took a deep breath and responded, In this story Im reading, it says that a boy is wearing a shirt thats inside out. Is that a problem? Tremor asked. Yes, said Troubled. You see, I keep wondering why its inside out instead of outside in! After all, if the inside is on the outside than the outside must be on the inside! Right? That makes sense, Tremor agreed. But inside out is the way everyone says it. But why? demanded Troubled Troll. I dont know, Tremor confessed. Its no big deal. Troubled was not comforted. And tell me, what if it is a big deal, he implored, and no one knows that its a big deal and someday everyone wakes up and realizes that theyve been saying it wrong? And what if....what if they suddenly understand that it really has been a big deal all along? That wont happen, Tremor Troll insisted, and even if it does, it wont exactly turn our world upside down. Troubled Troll was doing his best to remain calm. He gazed at his friend and whispered, Why didnt you say downside up?
For discussion: 1. Can you name anything in the story that shows that Troubled Troll is actually quite intelligent? 2. In what way does Troubled behave in a silly or foolish manner?

Tremor was very shy and reluctant to actually talk to a girl. How can I introduce myself to her? he asked his close friend, Trogmire Troll. Send her a nice text message, Trogmire suggested. I can get her number from her friend, Tammy Troll. Tremor had gotten his first cell phone just two days earlier so this would be the perfect time to enter the world of texting. Great idea! Tremor said, I can think all day in school about what Ill say. The boys got together after school and Tremor was ready. Ill say, Hi, Im Tremor, he told his friend. Mr. El and the Princess You should try one of these sundaes, said Mr. Smitty. Miss Joan nodded in agreement. Ill get around to it, Mr. El replied as he looked across the large Dairy Center tent. The three teachers were at their schools Back to School Fair. It had grown into a major annual event, sort of a mini county fair. What are you staring at, Mr. El? asked Miss Joan. I think Ill stroll over there and talk to the County Dairy Princess, Mr. El replied. She is beautiful, Mr. Smitty remarked. I hadnt noticed, said Mr. El, trying not to smile. Miss Joan rolled her eyes. Actually, my interest in her is purely professional, Mr. El stated. I might learn something about the dairy industry that I can share with my fourth graders. Mr. Smitty broke in, Besides, he likes that new resource teacher, Miss Cheryl. Miss Cheryl is kind of cute, Mr. El admitted. I like the way her eyes cross when shes annoyed. Why is it that you know how everyone looks when theyre annoyed? Miss Joan asked. Mr. El chose to ignore the question. Ill be right back, he said as he walked toward the dairy princess. Miss Joan and Mr. Smitty relaxed on a bench as they enjoyed their sundaes and watched Mr. El approach the princess. Mr. El and the young lady seemed to be having a pleasant conversation when suddenly the princess walked away with a much less than pleasant expression on her face. When Mr. El rejoined his friends, Miss Joan could not contain herself. Id give a million dollars to know what you said to her! she exclaimed. You dont have a million dollars, Mr. El responded. Ill buy you one of these giant hot fudge sundaes for the story, Mr. Smitty proposed. Deal! said Mr. El. I was asking her what qualities the judges look for in choosing a dairy princess. And? Miss Joan demanded. Well it just goes to prove that a sense of humor isnt one of the requirements, Mr. El replied. What did you say? Miss Joan asked with that What terrible thing have you done? look that she did so well. Just to add a little levity to the conversation, Mr. El went on, I asked her if looking like a cow was one consideration. You did what?! Miss Joan practically screamed. I think this is worth a double hot fudge sundae! Mr. Smitty announced. I thought shed know I was kidding, Mr. El stated. I say stuff like that to my students all the time and they know Im kidding. Thats because theyve learned not to take you seriously, Miss Joan said.
Well this girl, whos at least twice the age of my fourth graders, ought to know that she doesnt look anything like a cow. You cant win a competition to be a princess of any kind without knowing that youre smart and good looking. Maybe she thinks that you think that she looks like a cow, Mr. Smitty offered. Why would she care? Mr. El countered. Good question, said Miss Joan. But dont you see the damage youve done? she added. Damage, what damage? asked Mr. El. Up until today she was a self-confident young woman, destined for greatness. She might have become a scientist whose inventions would have saved millions of lives. She might have gone on to be a great leader who would bring peace and prosperity to the whole world! Miss Joan paused to catch her breath. But now, she continued, shell spend the rest of her miserable existence hiding her face. Shell live her entire life wearing a character costume at some amusement park so that no one will ever gaze upon her cowlike features! And needless to say, shell never save the world! You could just go over there and apologize, Mr. Smitty suggested. That might just make things worse, said Mr. El. In a few minutes shell forget I exist; shell forget what I said, and she can go on to save the world. Ill have my sundae now, Mr. El reminded Mr. Smitty. Didnt I hear double hot fudge? As Mr. Smitty walked off to buy the sundae, Mr. Kay, the principal, came by. Mr. El, he said, I have a nice surprise for you. Ive lined up your student teacher for this fall. Her name is Miss Lee. Shes already a very accomplished young lady. In fact, you may have noticed her at the fair. Shes here? Id like to meet her, said Mr. El. Thats her over there, Mr. Kay said. Shes wearing that shiny little crown. You mean that Dairy Princess crown? asked Mr. El. Thats her, said Mr. Kay. Miss Joan, who couldnt help hearing the conversation, had a broad smile on her face. Mr. El was not smiling. Excuse me, said Mr. El, I have to rush to my room and prepare a lesson plan! A lesson plan? asked the principal. Yes, sighed Mr. El, A lesson about thinking before speaking. For Discussion: 1. What lesson did Mr. El learn from his experience? 2. Can you think of any examples of someone making a similar mistake? 3. I Build Walls I build walls: Walls that protect, Walls that shield, Walls that say I shall not yield Or reveal Who I am or how I feel. I build walls: Walls that hide, Walls that cover whats inside, Walls that stare or smile or look away, Silent lies, Walls that even block my eyes From the tears I might have cried. I build walls: Walls that never let me Truly touch Those I love so very much. Walls that need to fall! Walls meant to be fortresses Are prisons after all. In this poem, walls are not made of bricks or any physical materials. The author uses walls as a metaphor for someone hiding his feelings and thoughts from others and even from himself. Why would someone build walls around his or her feelings? Do you, or others you know, ever build such walls? Does the narrator believe that its always a good idea to have these walls? How do you know? Do you think that there are times when we need to build walls?
Half-Truths Beware of those who use the truth to deceive. When someone tells you something that is true, but leaves out important information that should be included, he can create a false impression. For example, someone might say, I just won a hundred dollars on the lottery. It was great. I took that dollar ticket back to the store and turned it in for one hundred dollars! This guys a winner, right? Maybe, maybe not. We then discover that he bought two hundred tickets, and only one was a winner. Hes really a big loser! He didnt say anything that was false, but he deliberately omitted important information. Thats called a half-truth. Half-truths are not technically lies, but they are just as dishonest. Untrustworthy candidates in political campaigns often use this tactic. Lets say that during Governor Smiths last term, her state lost one million jobs and gained three million jobs. Then she seeks another term. One of her opponents runs an ad saying, During Governor Smiths term, the sate lost one million jobs! Thats true. However an honest statement would have been, During Governor Smiths term, the state had a net gain of two million jobs. Advertisers will sometimes use half-truths. Its against the law to make false claims so they try to mislead you with the truth. An ad might boast, Nine out of ten doctors recommend Yucky Pills to cure nose pimples. It fails to mention that they only asked ten doctors and nine of them work for the Yucky Corporation. This kind of deception happens too often. Its a sad fact of life: Lies are lies, and sometimes the truth can lie as well.
1. Which statement is true according to the article? a. Whenever people tell the truth, they are really lying. b. You cant trust gamblers. c. All governors help their states. d. The truth can be used in dishonest ways. 2. What does deceive mean? a. removing ones teeth in public b. ignore warnings c. fool d. repair 3. What does omitted mean? a. spent money b. left out c. told about d. exposed

And why is it that Little Bears animal friends can all talk and behave like people, but his friend Emily has a dog that can only bark and fetch? Tell me that isnt a mystery! Dog lovers can be reassured by Kipper and his friends. These dogs are very human. However, the only time they wear clothes is when they put on bathing suits to go swimming. Im confused! Speaking of dogs, could Pluto ever be Goofys pet? I dont get it! What did the great Mr. Disney have in mind? And this is gross! The other day we watched a very nice little pig setting up a picnic. One of the foods was a big ham. Could it have been a soy ham? Is there such a thing? I hope so! Another thing that bothers me: What if Elmo isnt real? He cant be a mere puppet! Hes got a better attitude than most people. I just keep wondering. I think well turn off the TV and go out for a walk. Maybe well run into that mouse who dresses well but certainly doesnt speak as clearly as the average bear. 1. Which word is a synonym of perplexing? a. boring b. confusing c. humorous d. itchy 2. The author probably __________. a. believes that Elmo is a real live creature b. wishes that Elmo were a real live creature
c. feels that Elmo is a very annoying creature d. wont let his son watch Sesame Street
5. The author is implying that __________. a. theres a TV mouse that should speak more clearly b. TV mice should not wear good clothes c. bears can really speak more clearly than mice d. watching television is better than playing outdoors 1________2________3________4________5________

Winter Heat Why do we even live in this part of the country? Mr. Smitty asked. He was standing on the school playground with Mr. El as they watched their students playing in the snow. I know what you mean, Mr. El said. Its 48 degrees in January and everyone thinks its a heat wave! Itll probably be 20 below again before you know it! Mr. Smitty complained. Suddenly Mr. El noticed movement by the far corner of the building. Look whos coming, he announced loudly. The two men could see Miss Joan leading a procession of little people marching toward the playground. I dont remember the last time Ive had a chance to chat with Miss Joan, Mr. Smitty remarked. I dont remember the last time Ive had a chance to annoy Miss Joan, said Mr. El. Miss Joan was smiling and obviously in a very good mood. Run and play, children, she said in her usual quiet and pleasant voice. It was instantly clear that her kindergartners had no trouble hearing the command. And how are you gentlemen? she asked. Almost warm, Mr. Smitty replied. Yes, thank goodness for global warming, Mr. El added, suppressing a grin. I beg your pardon! Miss Joan responded, looking not at all pleased. Hopefully, today is part of a trend, Mr. El went on. If the average temperature of our planet would shoot up, say fifteen or twenty degrees, living around here in the winter would be tolerable. What about the summer? Miss Joan demanded. I like hot weather. Oh, you like hot weather! Miss Joan shot back sarcastically, doing her best not to shout. Mr. Smitty decided to join the fray. We could buy nice summer homes in northern Canada, he suggested. I know that you know better, Mr. Smitty. Your colleague is another matter! Miss Joan said in a less than pleasant tone. She turned to Mr. El. I suppose its fine if everyone living near the oceans is washed away by the rising water when the polar icecaps melt, just so that you can be warmer without moving farther south. Dont be silly, Mr. El said in as sincere a voice as he could manage. It wont be one giant tidal wave. People will have time to gather up their belongings. It was quite evident that Miss Joan was no longer in a very good mood. She was no longer in any kind of good mood. Come children, she called, we are going in! Miss Joans kindergartners were not happy about their surprisingly short
recess, but they lined up dutifully and followed their teacher into the building. When are you going to tell her that you were kidding? asked Mr. Smitty. Mr. El laughed. I guess Ill wait till both the weather and Miss Joan cool down.
Fashion Blues Jill Carmer was the first student to walk through the classroom door. Good morning, my flower, Mr. El said as he finished writing the morning assignments on the board for his fourth graders. He was especially fond of Jill. She had a lot of qualities, Mr. Els favorite being that she always laughed at all his jokes. Mr. El, I like your blue jeans. You look cool! Jill said as she took her seat. Before Mr. El could acknowledge the compliment, Tommy and Alex Howard, the twins, walked in. Cool jeans, Mr. El, Alex announced. Soon the rest of the class was streaming in, and a chorus of similar comments could be heard. Thank you, thank you, Mr. El said to the class. I'm glad you guys like my new jeans. I wear Levis jeans almost every day and this is the first time anybody has even noticed. Angela Williams, the self-appointed fashion expert of the class, raised her hand and spoke without waiting to be called on. Thats because all the other jeans you wear are brown, black, green, tan, or gray. David Tyler waved both hands furiously until the teacher pointed at him. You see, Mr. El, youre wearing blue jeans, just like a real person. Thank you, David Mr. El responded and then addressed the entire class. Does it really matter what color denim jeans are? Think about it and well discuss the matter later. Mr. El took the roll call quickly and was pleased to find that no one was absent. This was that annoying day of the week when he had to get his kids to their gym class first thing in the morning. The class walked down the long hallway to the gym with Mr. El at the end of the line. He opened the door to the faculty room as he watched the last child in line disappear into the gym. Miss Joan was the only person in the room. Mr. El, what kind of field trip are you taking? she asked. What field trip? Youre wearing jeans. Isnt that a little unusual? I wear jeans all the time. These just happen to be blue. At that moment, Mr Kay, the principal, walked into the room. He glanced at Mr. El who was still standing by the door. Hmmm, he said as he walked over to the refrigerator that stood in the far corner of the room. He placed his brown paper lunch bag into it and walked back toward the door. How are you people this morning? he asked, and walked out before anyone could reply. Those are very nice jeans, Miss Joan continued, but arent they a little, shall we say, undignified for a professional position? Before Mr. El could respond, she added, Not that I mean to suggest that you ever are dignified. Mr. El smiled. He would have been disappointed if Miss Joan had not made the latter remark. How come you havent made any comments all the other times I wore different color jeans? I hadnt noticed. Besides, they werent blue jeans. They were the same brand, the same style, the same material. No one
noticed, no one cared. Miss Joan sighed, I get the feeling youre trying to make some profound point. Mr. El sat down at the long table that practically went from one end of the room to the other. My point, he said, is that humans are a strange species. They tend to put a lot of importance on unimportant differences. Miss Joan smiled. Thats true, she replied. But there are times when you have to pretend to be a human if you want to live successfully among them. To Write About or Discuss: 1. What was the same about the way Mr. El's students and Miss Joan reacted to the blue jeans? 2. What was different about the way Miss Joan and the students reacted? 3. Does it matter if jeans are blue instead of some other color? Should it matter?
Treasure, Part I Trogmire Troll was dealing with a crisis. The new girl in class really liked him a lot. Trogmire was not happy about it. Trogmires good friend, Tremor Troll, tried to comfort him. Whats the big deal? I think Treasure Troll is kind of cute. And she seems to be nice enough. Trogmire swallowed his last bite of poison sumac salad and glared at Tremor. Then why dont you ask her to be your girlfriend? There she is, sitting all by herself at the other end of the cafeteria. March over there and ask her to be your sweetie-poo! Shes crazy about you, not me, Tremor replied. Well, I dont want any girlfriend, especially not a weird pesky one like her! Trogmire growled. Tremor wouldnt give up. The only thing pesky about her is that she keeps writing you those notes and she stares - Yucky love notes! Trogmire interrupted. He took another sip of mole milk. Did you notice those strange brown eyes? Why arent they normal red or pink? Tremor took another look at Treasure. I think her face is a lovely shade of green. And her dark green curly hair is quite pretty. Besides, shes very sweet and thats what really matters. Trogmire stuck out his tongue. I think Im going to be sick! Id better save my dessert for later. He crammed a small bag of Maggot Munchies into his even smaller shirt pocket. The fact is, I have a problem. That girl is getting on my nerves! Tremor followed Trogmire's example and decided to save his dessert for later. However, he carefully placed the bag into his lunch box. Do you have any ideas about how to solve your problem? For Discussion: Has someone ever liked you a lot more than you liked him or her? What did you do about it? Whats the right thing to do? Treasure, Part II It was a warm and sunny autumn day: a perfect time to spend the last half of the lunch hour on the playground. Many of the students at Troll Knoll School were enjoying recess. Others were still in the cafeteria. Trogmire Troll and his friends were among those who were enjoying play time. Troubled Troll was it in a friendly game of Simon Screams. Simon screams, he screamed, eat dirt! Trogmire Troll, Tremor Troll, Tantrum Troll, and Truman Troll all pretended to eat dirt. They were too stuffed from lunch to really eat any dirt. Simon screams, Troubled continued with a wicked grin, Trogmire has a girlfriend! There was a lot of laughter. Trogmire Troll was not laughing, however. I quit this stupid game! Trogmire announced. He stalked away, heading toward the school. At that very moment, Treasure Troll walked out of the building. She was with her friends, Trivia Troll and Truffle Troll, but her eyes were focused only on Trogmire. Treasure held a small folded piece of paper in her hand. Trogmire attempted to walk past her without acknowledging that he even noticed her. Hi, Trogmire, Treasure said, and she reached out to give him the paper. Trogmire refused to accept the offering. He kicked the ground, spraying sand all over Treasures pink dress. Stay away from me, you dumb girl! he yelled. Trogmire would have been satisfied if Treasure had kicked sand back at him. It would have been fine if she had called him any bad name in the world. Trogmire would have felt lucky if Treasure hated him. But this did not appear to be Trogmire Trolls lucky day. Treasure Troll brushed the sand off her dress. She stood quietly for a few seconds and looked at Trogmire. There was no expression of hatred or even anger. She just stared at him with eyes that showed only sadness and disappointment. Without saying a word, Treasure turned around and walked back toward the school. She paused and dropped the rejected paper into a large trash can that stood by the door. Trogmire watched as she disappeared through the doorway. He was confused, and not even sure how he felt. Suddenly, he noticed someone standing by his side with a great big smile on a less than friendly face. Oh no, it was Tattle Troll! Trogmire had just made Tattles day.

Treasure, Part III The sign on the door said, T. Rubric Troll. No one knew what the T stood for, and no one dared ask. Trogmire Troll stood outside the principals office with a large sheet of paper in his hand. The playground monitor, Ms. Trouncer Troll, had written a lengthy narrative describing Trogmires behavior. Before Trogmire could knock on the door, it opened. The principal was standing there with a bottle of bubbly brown liquid in his hand. Come in and have a seat, Trogmire, he said. I was just enjoying a bottle of my favorite drink, toadstool juice soda, Mr. T. Rubric Troll said. Its one of the few things you can still get in good oldfashioned glass! Yes, sir, said Trogmire. Its very bad manners for anyone to eat or drink in front of someone who isnt also eating or drinking, the principal continued. What do you suppose will have to happen? Ill have to turn around so you can drink behind me, Trogmire replied. No! the principal boomed. I, a polite and proper troll, must offer you a bottle of soda. Would you care to have a bottle of toadstool juice soda? Trogmire hated toadstool juice soda, but he didnt want to offend the principal. Thank you, sir, he said. The principal held out a bottle for Trogmire. Here you are, lad, he said cheerfully, drink up! Thank you very much, Trogmire said. He didnt wish to prolong the agony, so he put his head back and chugged down the bottles entire contents in four seconds flat! Trogmire tried to be gracious. That was very nice. I -ERRRRRRUUP! The sound was so loud that a picture on the principals desk fell over. You burped! bellowed the principal. Trogmire wanted to say, I know that, but instead he said, I didnt mean to! What does a proper troll say when he makes any disgusting bodily sound? asked the principal. He didnt wait for an answer. He says, Pardon the expression. Pardon the expression, said Trogmire. Thats better, said Mr. T. Rubric Troll. Now, lets see whats written on your pass. Trogmire reluctantly handed over the document. The principal put on his glasses and stared intently at the paper. A look of disbelief came over his face as he read the message. Trogmire squirmed in his seat. This makes me very sad, the principal said softly. Trogmire Troll could not think of anything to say. Treasure, Part IV Trogmire was surprised by the principals reaction. After all, this wasnt the first time hed been sent to the office because of his behavior. And it wasnt the first time that he had been mean to a girl. When Trogmire had told Tina Troll that she looked like a human, the teacher was furious. The principal had just calmly lectured him about using such language, and about the hurtful effect of some words. Even the time he had pretended to be a rat by biting Trudy Trolls ankle, the reaction hadnt been this severe. Mr. T. Rubric Troll took control of his emotions and spoke in a calm but serious voice. Trogmire, I know youll find this hard to believe, but there have been some Trolls who have disliked me over the years. Have you ever had that problem? Yes. Sometimes I hadnt even done anything mean to them, Trogmire replied. Too often, youll come across those who dont like you. There will always be many who just dont care about you one way or another, the principal said. But those who do care about you, who think youre special, they are hard to come by. They are the treasures of our lives! Thats why it upsets me so much to learn what you did. But she wants me to be her boyfriend! Trogmire protested. You dont have to be her boyfriend. However, cant you be a friend? Trogmire didnt have an answer to that question. I suppose I should apologize to her, he offered. Only if youre really sorry, the principal responded. An insincere apology is just a lie. Trogmire did sincerely regret the way he had treated Treasure Troll, but he didnt know how to admit it, not even to himself.
1. What do you think Trogmire should do? 2. What do you think he will do? Now you are the author. Write the final part of the story.
