They help us describe a length of time.

Since refers to the time that something started and has to be a concrete point in the past.

Japanese people have worn garments similar to the kimono for hundreds of years. In fact, the
kimono has been around since the Heian period (794-1192). But they have stopped being
widely worn since the Meiji Period (1868-1912) when the government started to urge people
to look more ‘Western’.

Comparatively, kilts have only been around for about 500 years. Since the 19th century, they
have become a symbol of Scottish patriotism.

The oldest of these garments is perhaps the Sari, having been around since 2800-1800 BC! This
garment has been worn for thousands of years and is still widely worn today in India, Sri Lanka
and Nepal.

The traditional garb worn by the Maasai people of Africa is called a shuka. It is most
commonly red with a striped or checkered pattern. The term ‘traditional’ can be a tad
misleading here as the shuka has only been worn since the 1960s. Before Africa was colonized
by the Europeans, the Maasai people used to wear animal hides. Some believe that the shuka
is actually Scottish in origin as it has been in Africa since the ‘Africa Inland Mission’, which was
started by Scottish missionaries.

The parka is a windproof jacket, usually with a fur hood. It is a very popular, modern item of
clothing in cold climates such as Canada and parts of the U.S.A. But the parka has actually been
around for much longer than people think. This coat was first created by Inuit living in the
Canadian arctic. It was originally made from caribou and seal hides but is now made with
synthetic material and down*. Because of their warmth and practical nature, parkas have been
heavily used since their introduction into the military uniform in the 1940s.
