F: Ben, would you like to come to the beach with us this weekend? There’s room in
our house there and it’s going to be hot.
M: Well, I'm thinking of spending the time cycling. I want to follow the river as far as
Forest Hill.
F: You can go there another weekend. Come on, it’ll be fun!
M: Okay, thanks.

F: Excuse me, driver. I know it’s already quarter past four, but is there
time for me to go and buy some postcards?
M: OK. We never leave before half past four, and this afternoon it’ll be four
forty-five when we go, because I’ve got to wait for another group.
F: Good, so I’ve got thirty minutes.
M: Yes, but please don’t be late.

M: …..and later this evening on Channel 2 you can go with John Miles into the
countryside. He will visit the beautiful old village of Honeyford, 50 kilometres
from London. The programme is called 'Village Life' and takes you into a
village that is full of history. John visits the church, which is 600 years old and
crosses the famous Honeyford bridge.
In the village, John has some interesting conversations with the farmers who
live there. He hears their stories about working in the countryside. This
programme is at seven twenty-five, straight after the seven o'clock news.
Don't miss it.
Pictures and stories from this programme are in John Miles' new book called
'The Countryside'. If you would like this book, the number to call is 0170
2886. Or you can buy it at most good bookshops. People who enjoy the
programme will want to have the book. It costs twelve pounds fifty. There is
also a DVD of the programme at fifteen pounds.

F: I love these shoes, especially in this deep* red – they’re not at all pink or orange,
you know. I always wear size 39, so I don't know why they feel wrong. But they
do, and that’s a pity! Everybody’s wearing this sort of thing nowadays*, so I’d like
to as well. But I can’t wear anything that hurts my feet.

17 You will hear a woman leaving a phone message for her friend. Why’s the
woman phoning?
F: Hi, I get in at 4.30 tomorrow afternoon. Can’t wait to tell you about my new job! I’ll
get a coffee in that amazing place we went to last time and wait there for you to
finish work. I don’t mind waiting – I’m reading a really good book about an
Australian detective*, so I’ll be quite happy. Looking forward* to tomorrow!

18 You will hear a man talking about climbing a mountain. Why was it difficult
to climb?
M: Climbing the mountain was really hard! I spent hours in the gym for a week before
I went, but I started too late so I wasn't really ready to do it. There wasn't much
rain, in fact* it was quite pleasant. Next time I'll practise more, so I won't need so
much help from the others* in the group.

19 You will hear part of a talk in a museum. What’s the talk about?
M: This is one of the most interesting things in the museum. The colours are
extraordinary*, and so bright! It doesn’t work at the moment, unfortunately, but
we’re going to repair it. So if you come back next month it will tell* you the right
time! It was in a famous concert hall for two hundred years; the musicians
loved it.

20 You will hear a man talking about how he gets to work. How does he get to
work at the moment?
M: It’s an easy journey from my house to the office, and when the company gives me
a space in the car-park, I’ll drive. But for now, I’m enjoying the short walk* along
the river to the station, where I catch the 7.30 each morning. You have to be
careful, though*, because a lot of people ride their bikes along the path!

You will hear Gillian talking to a friend about a flat. What is wrong with each room
in the flat?
F: It’s so difficult to find good flats for students. I’ve just seen another terrible
one!
M: What was wrong with it, Gillian?
F: Everything! I couldn’t put on the light in the hall because it didn’t look safe.
M: Oh no! What about the living room?
F: Well, there were nice new windows but the room wasn’t big enough for four
students.
M: Was there a dining room?
F: Yes, but it was really dark in there, even with the light on.
M: That’s no good! Was the kitchen OK?
F: Well, the cooker was nice and modern. But no-one has cleaned the floor in
there for years. It looked terrible!
M: And the bathroom?
F: There was no heating in there - it was like a fridge.
M: That doesn’t sound very nice. Were the bedrooms better?
F: Not really. We’re all students so we need a place for our books, but the
bedrooms didn’t have any shelves at all.
M: You’re right, we need a better flat than that!
