• The Prime Minister (PM) of India has released the figures of the 5th

cycle of India’s Tiger Census (All-India Tiger Estimation) 2022.


• The PM released the Census while inaugurating the International Big
Cat Alliance (IBCA) at Mysuru, Karnataka, to mark 50 years of Project
Tiger.

About Tiger Census:


• The National Tiger Census is done by the National Tiger Conservation
Authority (NTCA) in partnership with state forest departments,
conservation NGOs, and the Wildlife Institute of India (WII).
• Period: Once every four years (2006, 2010, 2014, 2018, 2022)
• The double sampling method (introduced in 2006) is used in the
national tiger census, which involves ground-based surveys and
camera-trap images.
• The growth rate slowed to 6.7% in the
four years from 2018 to 2022, from
around 33% during 2014-2018.
• There has been a significant increase
in the tiger population in the Shivalik
Hills and Gangetic Plains.
• Uttar Pradesh’s Suhelwa Wildlife
Sanctuary and northwest of Yamuna
in Himachal Pradesh are the new
areas where the tigers were found.
• Tiger occupancy in the Western Ghats
declined, with significant declines
observed in the Wayanad landscape
and in the Biligiriranga Hills.
• Tiger occupancy in Northeast Hills,
Jharkhand, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, and
Telangana also showed a decline.
• The Nilgiri cluster (Nagarahole to Biligiriranga Hills) has the largest
tiger population in the world.
• The genetically unique and small population of tigers in Simlipal
Tiger Reserve, Odisha has been highlighted as area being of high
conservation priority.

• Total Tiger Reserves in India: 53 (as per NTCA)
• Periyar Tiger Reserve, Kerala is the best-maintained of all Tiger
Reserves followed by Satpura Tiger Reserve (Madhya Pradesh),
Bandipur Tiger Reserve and Nagarhole Tiger Reserve (Karnataka)
• Largest Tiger Reserve on the basis of core area: Nagarjunsagar
Srisailam Tiger Reserve, Andhra Pradesh
• Smallest Tiger Reserve on the basis of core area: Orang tiger
