BE A LOCAL HERO

1 Many people want to help others in their communities. One way to do that is to donate to
organizations that help people in need. But not everyone can give money. The great news is that you
don’t need money to help others in your community. There are many other ways to help people in your
area.

Give Away What You Don’t Need

2 Look around your house to see if there are any items you don’t use anymore. You can give away just
about anything. For example, you can give books or computers that you don’t use anymore to schools
or libraries. Animal shelters can use your old blankets and towels. Many organizations also take
clothes, toys, furniture, and kitchen items. But you can even donate old pairs of eyeglasses. Some
companies give old eyeglasses to people who need them. But you don’t always need to give to an
organization. Just look on local social media pages. People in your community often collect items for
special situations, like when a family loses a house to a fire or storm.

Give Your Time

3 If you don’t have things to give away, you can also donate your time. Many places in your
community need volunteers. You can read to older people at a retirement home or help children at a
school or library. You can even join a group to plant trees or clean up your local park or beach. Animal
rescue shelters often need people to walk dogs or play with cats. You can also help organizations
deliver food to people in the community.

Help Yourself by Helping Others

4 Helping people in your community can also help you in many ways. For example, donating clothes
or books helps you clean your house. When you help clean up a park or a beach, you are spending time
outside. Playing with animals at a shelter is fun for the animal and for you! As you can see, you can
choose something you enjoy doing and have a good time while helping others.

5 There are so many ways you can be a local hero, even if you don’t have a lot of money to give.
Giving away items or volunteering your time can be just as helpful as donating money. And it always
feels good knowing you’re making your community a better place.
