Chapter.01 Introduction
1.1 Background
The increasing global demand for energy, coupled with the imperative to mitigate the
alternative and sustainable solutions. Among these, ocean energy stands out as a promising
frontier, harnessing the vast and untapped potential of the world's oceans. The sea water power
generator emerges as a novel technology designed to leverage the kinetic and thermal energy
generation[1].
Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak has introduced the Government
address 7 National Key Result Areas (NKRA), aiming to enhance the socio-economic growth
of the Malaysian population with the vision of achieving developed nation and high-income
status by 2020. Two of the NKRA specifically target the improvement of rural infrastructure
and ensuring access to clean or treated water. Currently, 35% of the Malaysian population
resides in rural areas with limited access to proper roads, water, and power supply. Moreover,
only 57% of rural houses in Sabah and Sarawak have access to clean or treated water.
In alignment with the nation's goals, this project focuses on identifying the most cost-effective
and innovative approach to providing electricity and clean water supply, ultimately enhancing
reducing greenhouse gas emission intensity by 40% by 2020, as declared at the 2009

Desalination System
The project explores two types of solar desalination: direct and indirect technologies. Direct
solar desalination, while requiring large land areas, is cost-effective and straightforward,
conventional desalination techniques with solar collectors for heat generation, offering
enhanced productivity.
Desalination involves processes that eliminate salt and minerals from water, producing fresh
water for human consumption. Developing a cost-effective desalination technique for rural
areas where fresh water is scarce is a significant challenge. However, desalination can be a
viable solution for water-stressed regions near the beach. For areas deep in the jungle, desert,
Current environmental concerns about ocean water desalination plants include greenhouse
effects and hazardous gas emissions. Photovoltaic technology emerges as a promising solution
to power desalination plants[4]. This project focuses on optimizing the design of a mini-grid
power system for sea water desalination using a photovoltaic power system, providing a green
power source that can benefit rural communities where utility companies are geographically
distant.
The desalination technique employed in this project is the distillation process, converting raw
water using heat sources to separate undesirable elements through vaporization. Solar power
serves as a cost-effective and eco-friendly alternative for the distillation process, addressing
the high cost of traditional heat sources. Through this approach, the project aims to enhance

Various technologies have been developed to harness the diverse forms of energy present in
the oceans. Wave energy converters, tidal turbines, and ocean thermal energy conversion
(OTEC) systems represent prominent examples. Wave energy converters capture the energy
from ocean surface waves, while tidal turbines extract energy from the movement of tidal
currents. OTEC systems utilize the temperature difference between warm surface water and
cold deep water to generate electricity[16]. These technologies collectively contribute to the
growing field of ocean energy, each with its unique set of advantages and challenges. Ocean

This project has concluded successfully, demonstrating the proper functionality of both the
solar system and the desalination system. The potential impact of this achievement is
particularly significant for rural areas facing challenges in accessing fresh water supply. Future
research endeavors will focus on enhancing the efficiency of this system and reducing its
operational costs.
In the imminent future, the diminishing availability of fossil fuels and the escalating demand
for irrigation underscore the critical need for a sustainable and renewable source of fresh water.
Solar and geothermal energy emerge as the most promising renewable options. Despite existing
seawater desalination applications primarily relying on solar thermal energy, integrating solar-
powered devices into the system offers a viable solution for supplying electricity to rural areas.
This research opens avenues for further development by integrating the proposed desalination
system outlined in this paper with large-scale desalination plants, such as Multi Effect (ME) or
Multi Stage Filtration (MSF). Such integration holds the potential to achieve a reasonable
operating cost and high efficiency, presenting a novel solution to current challenges and future
